Is there a button sector in HK somewhere (island or NT)? (i've seen the plumbing, fabric, paper, chop etc streets but haven't seen buttons at all -except in department stores)

Other than TC's sugestion you visit the steps between Wellington and Queen's Road in Central, there are dozens of shops selling buttons and ribbons in Sham Shu Po on Kowloon side.

Related question - I am looking for snap fasteners (you know the little dome type things that snap together - need to sew each half onto the garmetn). Any idea where I could find these? I was sure I had seen in the Wellcome on Robinson Rd but not now. Should I also try Pottinger?

Guess you mean the things that are called press studs in Aust. Haven't seen any on my forays in Hong Kong but feel sure you would get them in Sham Shui Po as they have all sewing needs there. I have had a snap fastener fixed in that area but they cannot be sewn on but attached to leather with a tool. Whichever, you should find them in Sham Shui Po.

Thanks, I'll give Sham Shui Po a try. Is there anywhere in particular there that I should try? Is it a shop that you say has sewing needs or is it near the market stalls that sell all the cables and light blubs etc?

And I think they're called 'poppers' in the UK. Pottinger Street should also carry them - haven't seen them specifically but if it's closer it could save you an unnecessary trip to SSP.

Seen them in the larger PNS and Wellcome shops.

Thanks everyone. I'll try Pottinger St first. I am sure I saw them in the Wellcome on Rob. Rd but not there now. Might have to try another one.
