Sterilisers

Anyone used the microwave version of bottle sterilisers? There is a significant price difference between the microwave and the electronic types... yet some people have said the microwave ones are fine, while others disagree.

any thoughts?>

i have both. first the electronic one, i thought that there must be a reason why it was more expensive, ie more expensive = better. Then i stayed with someone who has a microwave one and i was converted. The avent microwave steriliser takes only 4 minutes. as oppposed to 15 minutes. My son never got gastro while i was using it. More importantly the microwave steriliser can be thoroughly cleaned. The electric one has to be descaled every month and when you see the black gunk that comes off the heating element when you do this you wont want to use it again.

Both are fine. They wouldnt sell both types of sterilizers if they were not up to the standards.I am sure that Companys have tested them thoroughly to make sure that they sterilize up to the correct temperature. A dishwasher heats ten degrees lower than a sterilizer so when I stopped sterilizing my babies bottles I put them in the dishwasher and felt more at ease that they were still getting a really good clean.

I also used an electric one to start with, and then converted to a microwave one. Electric really is so much more of a hassle than the microwave one. As Southside Mum said, you have to descale it regularly. With our microwave one I just put it in the dishwasher to clean, and you don't get the gunk.

I also used the Avent one with non-avent bottles. If I remember, if you put in Avent bottles then you do it for 3 mins, for non-Avent bottles you do it for 5 mins.

For my 1st 3 I used the old fashioned cold water with steraliser tablet, fine but takes a min of 30 mins. Foe the last 2 I used a microwave steraliser, it was brilliant, ready in 5 mins. Would definately recommend them.

Can you use the Dr. Brown bottles in the Advent microwave steriliser?

With steralisers, my understanding is, if the bottle fits, you can use it.

You might want to be sure it fits by checking in the shop.

We use an electric NUK steraliser, but when we travel we use Microwave steraliser bags - super invention!

oh, they are great! Lindam makes them, but there is a Japanes brand they are based on. So I have seen the Japanese brand but only after I bought Lindam.

Mothercare in UK has them, and on another thread someone saw them at B2B.

For two children used the Avent microwave steriliser. Easy to use, portable. The hospital I had my children in used the microwave sterilisers for Mums who needed to express milk, to sterilise the pumping equipment. Would think this is a good endorsement for their effectiveness. Would recommend buying avent bottles if going to use that steriliser b/c they fit so nicely and you are sure they are thoroughly sterilised. My steriliser came with 2 free bottles - not sure if same here. You can also use it to sterilise bowls and spoons when baby first starts solids (if they are microwave safe).

You can use each bag 20 times. You wash the stuff first in hot soapy water. Then rinse. Then put in bag with 70ml water. Then put in Microwave for 3 minutes, and let bag cool for about 5-10 before opening and taking htings out to dry.

Great when we travel. Hotels will either put a microwave in our room or let us use the one in their kitchen.

thanks crj,

not sure if they sell in SG's mothercare but saw it on the Uk website...it looks fab...think i'm going to stock up on them when i visit!

ok another question....the 70ml is boiled water or just tap? and when you wash your bottles, do you fill the bathroom sink with hot soapy water or do you bring along some mini-tub?

I just washed them in the bathroom sink, and the 70ml is just tap water in most places, but in Bali I used bottled water.

Bring detergent with you - you can put some liquid dish detergent in a small shampoo bottle.
