How does one go about becoming a Chinese citizen? How long do you have to have been a resident in Shanghai before you can apply for citizenship? How long does it take to get citizenship after you've applied and is your situation changed if you marry a Chinese citizen?

All application of citizenship is to be reviewed on a case to case basis. If you are not a chinese by race, you will probably encounter more problem. Just to quote you an example, indians who have stayed in Hong Kong for generations are refused Chinese passport because their race. So, it appears that it is an uphill task for non-chinese to become Chinese citizen.

it is already one year that you posted this message? as i also would like to get the Chinese citizenship, i would like to know whether there is any progress with your application.

The "Citizenship law" that was promulated in the 1980th is very simple. it states that you can apply for Chinese citizenship if you have Chinese relatives. However there seems to be no regulations how to implement the law. E.g. i don't know where to file an application. At least the Exit-Entry administration of the PSB don't accepts application.

Hongkong with its own legislation is different, they have a procedure how to apply.

BTW: i came to China 19 years ago, now living/settled down in Beijing.
