I have just moved here and desperately need a hair cut and style but am wary about going to just anyone without recommendation. I know they have Tony and Guy but are they worth it or are there better stylists out there for western hair?
Thx for your help!

I went to ELF STUDIO, Shop 8, Tung Nung Building, 249-251 Des Voeux Road C (Entrance on Hillier St) recently. Newer shop, great opening specials. Ricky Ting is lovely and knows what he is doing.
All the people I know who used to go to Toni and Guy are now going to Ricky.

I think it really depends on type type of hair you have. I would definitely recommend Paul Gerrard. He will make sure you're totally satisfied.

I am giving a real recommendation... promise!
I have been to so many hairdressers around the place and keep going back to Paul. My hair is difficult to manage, but Paul always seems to deal with it better than anyone else. I would like to try Hajira in TST some time. I've heard fabulous things about her.

Nope...sorry, we are not the same person. Quite different but I would say that we both know enough about life in HK to be of some use here in Practical.
If you are THAT curious, I could send a pic that was sent to me from the ELF studio after my last haircut with the stylist. I have naturally curly, thick hair and they are the best I have found in HK who know how to cut it without making it too thin or too straight.

I also belive that in Nov 2003, Ed made the site so that one had to log in with a user name and password at all times. I suppose many people signed up in that time. Does that make one suspicious of everyone who joined?
@ Need Some Info: Sorry, I find it a little rude to assume people would purposely give you crap advice just because we happened to establish an account on the same day. We know what a good haircut is worth to a woman and god knows, I have had enough bad ones, here and abroad, to know not to recommend a less-than-good salon.

well guys - I decided to try for Phillip George and yes - WOW! Even the security guards and managemnt office told me it looked good - did I look like an old minger before????!!! Anyway thank you - these forums rock! I just need a bit less baby fat and then Lan Kwai F eat your heart out - LouLu is coming to town! :-)

I agree that Phillip George is great but he's really expensive. I can only afford him once or twice a year !

Hey Loulu- did u get it done by Phillip George himself and if so- what was the cost roughly? Thinking of having a really fabulous haircut to show off as my ex is in town and want to look good (for my own self esteem)

I had the works pretty much : cut, blowdry, colour and french manicure (to treat myself)and it came to $1400 which I thought not bad. But I used to live in Japan so am used to paying an arm and a leg, so thought it was ok! I would go for it - you will not regret it - but your ex will :-) haha

The HAIRDRESSERS, of COURSE!!!
Do you know how your hair looks really good when you leave the salon & then you wash it... and it just NEVER looks that good again until you go back TO the salon??? If you want a REAL haircut, that you can simply WASH (FORGET EVEN BLOWDRYING!!!), and it will sit EXACTLY like it did in the salon, please go & see Oliver - he is a MASTER!!! (Actually, he is one of the only hairdressers in Asia with the title "Master" in his qualifications! I have known Oliver for about 16 years now, and everyone I've recommended him to says he's fabulous...what I WOULD NOT recommend him for is a fancy up-do or blowdry. He's a master cutter, NOT a master stylist!!!
Please support our advertisers:
P.S.: If you would like a terrific up-do or blowdry, visit Koryn at Ken Qi Salon in Central Building. She's FAB!!! She only works a few hours each day, so booking with her is a treat. Their number is: 2522-1112.

I'd like to back up lotus. I've been going to Oliver since I was 8, and my hair always looks great : ) He's such a sweetheart, go visit him for a chat and a great cut.

Depends on your budget, but I just went to Ricky as Elf as recomended by Tia, and he is good.....and teh price is really reasonable. I spoke to him for a bit and he is trained in Australia.....

well i've never regreted a single cut/style/colour/etc. at Philip George's and i go once a month! he can do so many different styles! i love getting complements at work. specially from the male population cause they never notice anything usually!

I AM SO EXCITED AND HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE!!! :D
After SO MANY recommendations for Philip George Salon on this (an another thread -LOADS there!) I finally plucked up the courage to go as this time I was less than happy with the highlights I recently got from my usual colour guy.
I have a strong olive tone to my skin, which can be a NIGHTMARE for most hairdressers not used to this when finding the right colour for highlights. I used to be SO apprehensive when it was time for a touch up as I have had some AWFUL experiences with colour that have left my ever-tanned complexion hideously "muddy" looking, or even brazen orange streaks that looked as if they belonged on the head of a "woman of Wan Chai" (another hairdresser actually told me this once)!
The last time I can honestly say that I've LOVED my hair is when I used to get it done at Oribe in New York (he's now shut up shop & is Jennifer Lopez's personal hairdresser)... *sigh*
UNTIL NOW...!!!
OH MY GOD!!! Not only is Philip George a lovely, LOVELY person, but he is a WIZARD with colour!!! He knew EXACTLY what I wanted (while I fumbled to explain) and explained it to me in such clear layman's terms that I was immediately at ease!
My experience...pure MAGIC!!! I am just SO happy! :D I left feeling like a super-model!!! (Move over, JLo!!!)
Was it pricey?! A little, but truly worth the investment since now that I KNOW it'll be right, I won't have pay for it only to re-do it and ruin my hair in the process!!!
PLEASE GO - it would be a wonderful gift for yourselves! He's located in the building behind Marks & Sparks in Central and their number is: 2523-3143.
And after all this promoting, I will still be honest and say that I will only let Oliver at The Hairdressers cut my hair - he's the absolute best & if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

Ok i just returned from a "popular" expat hairdresser..can't mention names...& am very disappointed with the coloring/highlights done.
I asked for sun kissed blonde highlights, & ended up with cooper/reddish highlights instead! Even though I specifically told the hairdresser NO RED/COPPER!
I need this fixed like yesterday! As much as it irks me, I'm willing to blow another wad of cash to fix this mess.
HELP I gotta this this repaired quickly !
Can Philip George repair my color..& do an excellent job?
I've heard such glowing reports, but would love to hear from some of you blondes on your experience with him. I hate the cooper highlights I have now...so please tell me he can come to my rescue!

Hi! I got a perm at one of the Chinese salons (my first time to curl hair) last weekend and now, it's straight already and a bit dry (I have very healthy straight hair)... After all the posts, I'd like to go and have it re-done at Philip George. Anybody has tried a perm there? Or any other recommendations?
Thanks!

Why were my comments about Hajira deleted? This is seriously inappropiate to present such a one- sided viewpoint. This forum should be open to many points of view. Let me remind you that you lose credibility if you do not have transparency.

ntah,
I called Hajirah for an appointment hopefully today but she's fully booked. Can you send me a PM about your thoughts about her? Wasn't able to read your post prior to its deletion. Thanks
Please support our advertisers:
Hey I use Hajirah she's GREAT ... in the past I have used Paul Gerrad ... I was not pleased with what I had done! The cut and style was just not suitable to my liking. Plus, I have even tried Esprit and some other before finding Hajirah.
This does not mean that these salons and the stylist at them are horrible people - they just did not 'fit' what I was wanting from a hairstylist. I am sure that they are all talented stylist but, just did not suit me.
Now, I can understand Tennisgal may have had an experience but sharing an opinion does not mean derogatory and negitive comments.
Now, Tennisgal I wish you the best in finding a hairstylist that meets and suits your taste and style. I, myself, know that it is not easy to find someone who understands the complexities associated with combining personal style with hair style.
As what is one person's tresure may not hold true for another person.

Went to Elf Studio for haircolor and highlights yesterday, and consulted Ricky on what colors to use for my hair.
He is a good stylist and analyzed my hair satisfactorily, but unfortunately my colorist didn't do a good job with my highlights. I wanted the H-lights to blend in subtly with my dark base color, but the resulting effect was too yellow, "stripes" too thick, some color "bleeding", and highlights applied almost 2inches from my scalp. Worst part is, the bad coloring were concentrated where I part my hair. In short, my hair now looks like it has been colored/highlighted 2 months ago!!!
I intend to go back tomorrow or on Friday to have it "repaired"-- at least tone down the yellow streaks...
Please support our advertisers:
Annebin - I can relate to your situtaion as that is EXACTLY EXACTLY what happened to me the summer of 2004 ...I ended up going back and having the salon fix it - and in the end that is what DAMAGED my once beautiful long blonde mane ... argghh I am still upset about. What the salon did was colour my entire head one colour (base colour) then did redid the highlights and lowloghts. It was after having this so called 'repair job' done that I meet Hajirah, through a friend, since this time she has been working with me to repair my mane - which I can finally say after almost 2 years is about to a healthy hair status and the color is what I want.
If you are going back to the same salon for them to fix it then I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you within the next 72 hrs go for a deep conditioner treatment then wait another 2 to 3 days to have them fix it - YES I realize you want it fixed immediately but so much colouring will further damage the hair. Even maybe it's folics (roots) - which will cause long term damage and you will have wait till your entire mane grows back out.
AHHHHHHHHH I wish 2 years ago someone had given this advice!
Please support our advertisers:
Thanks BlueM&M! Was considering postponing the repair earlier from fear of damagin my hair. I have long, fine hair, and I don't want it to go through more chemical stuff that it can handle. I would just have to change my part to hide the awful streaks..
I would still go back to Elf for treatments because I think Ricky knows what he's doing and we have good chemistry. I would wait til my next trip back to Manila to have my hair cut though..

there are so many suggestions on this post - its great! but alot of these places are too expensive for me. I need somewhere where I can get blonde highlights for under 800HK. any suggestions for this price range?

Rocky Star, The Hairdressers has a range of prices and it sounds like your friend went for the top end. Our Senior Stylists charge $600 for a haircut and a half head of Highlights would be $1050. We are considered to be Mid Range for Central salons. If price is a concern we have other level stylist who charge lower rates so its just a matter of specifying what level stylist you want. Im glad your friend is happy with the hair though.

Anyone know exactly what the difference is between a Stylist, Top Stylist, and Senior Stylist besides their price. What base do they get their titles from...training experience or number of years as a hairdresser etc.?

Thanks D-Man.
So I guess it's safe to say a new an upcoming "Stylist" could be as good as a "Master Stylist" whom have been doing it for longer.
Suggestion to all that don't want to pay the high price for those Central Salons. Go to a reputable salon and book the Stylist!!
Thanks again D-Man.

anyone looking for a truly fantastic stylist that is resonably priced, try the girl I just had at the Philip George Salon. it only cost 350. My hair is getting curlier by the minute from the humidity and Ivy gave me such confidence in knowing how to manage it without looking frumpy.I actually look fashionable at last.
Other places thinned it to death and just made it look frizzy.
D-Man, do you also recommend the PG Salon as one of the best here?

qvong, no i would not say an up and coming stylist would have the same experience as a master or even top stylist. When you consider an up and coming may have 3-5 years experience where as a top stylist woulde have say 6-10 years and a master or such would be more like 15-20 years. Usually the up and coming guys are still unter traning.
Jovicky, yes PG and the boys there are very nice, its pretty good value for what you get.

D-Man....I understand your point. However,it's sufficient to say that it's not necessarily always true that people who have been in the industry longer and have more years experience will be better than the upcomers. And that goes for all industries..So why pay the high prices at a top salon for a Senior/Master and take a chance on the newby. Stated for the people who don't want to pay the high prices.

qvong, yes your right even a very experienced person can make mistakes as humans all do but you do lesson the risk with a more experienced person. I mean you may not want a fresh grad plastic surgon just because they are cheaper.
Some young stylists are great and are usually a little hungrier so in some ways you may get better attention. It really depends on the individual tho.

D-Man..you are correct...On the plastic surgeon thing and the hungry new comers.
There will always be risks with the people we choose whom is suppose to make us feel better and look better. And everyone human being makes mistakes whether they intend to or not.
Bottom line...It's hair...It'll grow back!! There is more to worry about in this world than a bad hair cut.

Have visited Hajirah a few times. I am very pleased with the results as it is not easy finding someone who can correctly do highlights and lowlights for blondes in this town. I have tried countless times and seem to leave the salon looking more like a cartoon character than a person. Thankfully that is not the case anymore. Hajirah is great and actually takes the time to listens, explains the process and the potential results. She does make me feel rushed and is not concerned about her turn a around time for her appointments unlike the feeling of several of the "Central Salons" mentioned in this thread.
Thanks Hajirah - JOB WELL DONE and look forward to seeing you again soon.
Tennisgal and others, maybe supporterss of Hajirah, like myself, are not continously sitting on this thread taking a tally or looking to bad mouth people.
It is hair and it will grow back.

I've been to a good salon but i can't go that often 'coz it's so expensive.. also found local hairdressers always cut my hair to make it look so thin.. i hate that.. i got straight hair and i think it's pretty easy to cut ... i don't know how they could ruin it!

For a day trip to HK from Guangzhou, I went straight to Viva in Central last Friday for ion straightening. Was a bit apprehensive especially when Wing started talking in his mobile for a long time as he was using the hot iron on my hair. I pulled my hair away while he was talking and he got the message.
After a few days...a manageable hair and a lot of compliments including my husband who commented my hair looks so tidy.
A bit of blow drying on my fringe and some hair serum, presto I am ready to go.

LOOK NO FURTHER... I cannot more highly recommend the people and service at Philip George. Absolutely FANTASTIC!! Everything about the place, from the people, to the head massage during the shampooing, hair cut and color was great. They say three is a charm, I wanted to wait until after my third visit to recommend them since some places butter you up a bit during your first visit but not in this case. They are professional consistantly, the staff is friendly and never in a rush to get you out. If anything Philip George is worth at least one visit...whether you go back you can decide but I stopped looking for a hair dresser when I found them. Sorry to all the other great places around. Philip George had me at hello.
