All depends which book you read and whom you speak with...
For example, for cradle cap - our Doctor said use vaseline, our Midwife said use olive oil or grapeseed oil. (oil is easier, and it is what we use for baby massage after bath every night, so this is what we use)
I have some books which say use vaseline for all sorts of things.
Others which say vaseline has minerals which will seep into the baby's system.
The way I see it, and others will disagree, is we do what we can to protect our babies - but we can't do everything.
We live in HK, it is polluted, we have microwaves, computers, mobile phones, plastics... We try to buy organic and live healthy but nobody can be perfect.
If the vaseline your doctor gave you worked - stick with it!
Vaseline in the plastic tub with the blue lid comes in all different sizes. At Matilda they gave us the 'small' size, but you can buy the big size at Watsons, Mannings, etc...
Good luck, and I hope that your baby's eczema gets better soon.

Both of my babies have eczema... b/c I do. Nothing helped EXCEPT since using Dead Sea Salts from SPA for their baths. My both babies have silky skin now.... try it. It's amazing. I use the baby soap, and baby sea salts for their baths everyday. I use the adult products. But I see it works the fastest with babies.

I get them from Wing ON, or Citysuper department store section ( Harbour City)... I know they have many places .... best to call them.

Dead Sea Salts for bath, the mud soap for baby, use it for hair and body.... immediately, you see the difference. The next morning, the rash, flaking skin, oozes, ... all subsided... and 1 week, same treatment, No more eczema. I wonder why I didn't try it sooner! They have specific information and instructions for babies with eczema. Good luck !

mummybee, sorry you got a sales person that looked to me "pushy" sales... more than trying to well inform you.
I use the salts for baths. I dissolve 2 spoons of salts into a bath filled with water for my baby. It's not to hydrate the baby's skin, it's more like.... have you ever tried hot springs in Japan? Or Taiwan? Their water makes your skin problems go away after you soak in it..... except you can't bring the water home.
This in a way, is like making your own SPA hot springs at home. The water of course doens't smell of the strong sulphur smell that many hot spring does.... but the minerals, and nutrients from the dead sea is in the dead sea salt.... anyways, I tried it, both my babies have smooth silky skin. I took them to the pediatrician today, he asked me what happened to them ! ? Hahaha
There is a sea salt specifically for baby, b/c it's finer.... but if you are dissolving into the water anyways, who cares? I bought the big jar, the whole family is using it. You just have to find the time to Soak into a bath though !
My baby started using it at 6 weeks, it's been 6 weeks already, miraculously... no more eczema. The occassional outbreak of the eczema happens when I over dress him... he gets all hot, and then it breaks out in his tummy, and inside the folds of his arms and legs.
There is a mud (black) soap for babies... I use that instead of all the Oilatum, Aveeno, SebaMed, Mustela products that I have tried... (all useless).
Anyways, hope it works for you, it worked for me.
Don't listen to the stupid sales, just wanted to sell you everything that's all.

Mummybee, Wingon's SPA is closed? Which WingOn is this ?
I am crossing my fingers for you and your baby, hope it will help her skin. My ped gave Elomet too to my baby, I used it once, he screamed SO much when I applied it, and it smells so bad (alcohol completely)... I stopped using it immediately.
To add to my little story of the ped visit yesterday, the ped thinks it's all his stuff that cured/helped my baby's skin ! hahaha!
Let me know how it goes ok ? Good luck.

I look fwd to that thread! My babies are still looking good ... keeping it up. I am using their masks .... seems like each time I use it, the next day, someone would say I look more revived.... as you know how sleep deprived us newborn mothers are.....
Good luck! Look fwd to your next message.

Mummybee, just wondering if your baby's eczema has improved over the last week ?
Please support our advertisers:
Mummybee, so sorry to hear all that you are going through. I guess I have to be a little more detailed in what I am doing with my kids' skin.... their skin remains very good using the salts and mud soap. I find if I DON'T use the salts for soaking baths, the skin will flare up a little bit....
Besides using just the salts, I use a microcurrent machine to "ionize" the water with the salts, which I didn't bother mentioning b/c not many people know what this is. But I don't know whether this is the significant factor.
I have always used the microcurrent machine for baths, but the eczema never fully goes away.... until I added the use of the salts.
I also use after the bath, ALWAYS, a body moisturizer from Mustela. The one that is for dermatitis. Cetaphil for the face (three times a day).
If I skip ANY of the above steps, my daughter (2 and half years old) will have rash flare up in her legs and arms. My baby will flare up in the tummy, and neck and face and scalp.
One thing to look into is the formula (if any) you are giving your baby.... some babies are allergic to the formula that they develop bad eczema. Doctors recommend to try Soy formula to reduce the flare ups.
Also, are you using the really expensive BABY laundry detergent (forgot the name, but the one that is in a small pack, $ 100).... I find using any other baby detergent for their clothes, the moment they touch them, they will flare up as well.
If you want to talk more, PM me. I can't find you on the list for PM.
Hope all goes better for you.

Has anyone else tried the spa products that Katetam recommended? I am getting desperate here. Don't want to put anymore steroid cream on her. Do they sell these products in North America?

TC1 - What are the things you try to do to reduce/get rid of eczema flare ups? Everything you do from bath-related to cleaning-related to moisturizing-related to food-related, etc..
Katetam - Why do you use ionized water? What is it about the water that you feel helps eczema? Curious.

Amazingly, the eczema has gone. It had been with her since she was 2 months' old. She is now 8 months & first 6 months was all BF. I didn't use any steriod cream & hopefully it won't come back. Don't know about ionized water but we do have water softener like most of the Canadian do.
Will have a look at the diet website to prevent it though. Thanks.

TC1, 15 days ago, you said you were desperate. 3 days ago, you said the eczema is all gone. What did you do? Did you use the sea salts I recommended for her?
Great to hear the eczema gone.
You know I did a little experiment. I took my toddler to Tokyo for 5 days. No dead sea salts for bath. Her eczema flared up on the third day of the trip... so bad, she was itchy so badly, she was screaming on the plane on the way back to HK. two days now back to using dead sea salts, no more rash and she's back with baby soft beautiful skin again.

Katetam - no, I didn't get the chance to use the dead sea salt that you recommended cos I was not in HK.
I used EGO oil for her bath. Before the bath, I also put some Ego oil for her face. The, I put 10% glycerine cream in Galaxal base on both her face & body. Rub it very gently for a while. Finally,I apply plainseline over the entire skin. This works for her after 5 days. Have to say it's not completely disappear but it's 90% okay now.
I also take her out for a walk often so she can have some sun & fresh air. Don't know if that works.
I may still ask my family to get me dead sea salts from Hong Kong. Do you know if they sell it in Canada?
