Do you feel FAT?

ORIGINAL POST

I bought a gym membership, but am too conscious of my own figure to actually go and exercise. I can't even look at others in the eyes when I am in a Gym, i feel like a loser and FAT! I had a knee operation last October, and gained 12kg.

What should I do?

Closetcase - have you thought of hiring a trainer, someone you feel comfortable with that can get you motivated? I have been with my trainer for 4 mths now and can really see the difference in myself, I also enjoy our sessions which keeps me going.

The first thing you need to work on is yyour motivation, everything else will follow.

Good luck!

Closetcase,

Congratulations on taking the first step by enrolling in the gym! You've made this bold move, so now next step forward and do what you're supposed to do there.

I agree with Vulvic-- find a trainer to motivate you, guide you through the exercises and monitor your progress. Also, a trainer will make sure you work out safely, especially after your knee operation.. If this is not feasible at the moment, join a class that interests you and enjoy! If you are not comfortable working out with so many people, try going during lean hours (11am and 2-4pm), that way you have the gym all to yourself.

I find it helps to wear comfy, loose clothes -- gym shorts and a T shirt -- not the meat market stuff that makes you feel like you're hanging out all over. Put your hair up and make yourself look stylishly hip. If you can't afford a trainer, maybe a friend who also wants to lost weight would consider joining you. Plus, think good thoughts. Maybe they are thinking to themselves, "Wow I really admire that person who is getting fit and doing something about her weight."

Also you would be suprised how many 'thin' people are neurotic and paranoid about their own figures. Chances are they're to busy worrying about themselves.

I've had a couple of traumatic episodes recenting and my weight has been yoyo-ing. I actually find that when I'm feeling like mr.blobby, I feel less conscious of how I look - I'm actually more energetic in classes and on the machines, because I think: I look fat anyway, so who cares if I look stupid, unfit and unco-ordinated too?

I am just always impressed when I see someone making an effort to get healthy. I see people all shapes and sizes walking and running Bowen Road every morning and I think they are all fantastic, JUST DO IT!!

Once you get into the groove you'll find everything starts looking better, you'll sleep really well, your skin will glow, you will feel more confident and you'll probably drop a dress size or so!

I really agree with the comment someone made about thinking good thoughts.

I'm lucky enough to be reasonably slim (By western standards not Asian) . I go to the gym intermittently and when i see bigger people really going for it and putting effert into their own fitness I feel nothing but admiration for them. Esp in this city where at 50kg and 5 foot tall I often feel 'fat'. (when i stop and think about this i know how ridiculous that is!!)

It's far too easy to feel like a freak here being just a few pounds over weight.

Seriously take heart that many intelligent and thinking people will be admiring your strength of character and motivation to do something positive for yourself.

Good luck with it.
