My anti-virus is expiring in a few days, and when I clicked to renew, the options being offered come with a cost.
Are there other anti-virus programs which I can download and use for free? What can you recommend?

I learned about AVG when my NAV was disabled by a virus that slipped through on one of my machines. I went looking for alternatives and found AVG - and have been quite pleased with it. You can also find on-line virus scanners that you can use to check if everything is ok, but you still need AVG or an equivalent - even with firewalls, mailwasher pro, or anything else. Unless of course you move to Linux.

Installed Grisoft's AVG today and no virus was found /no files infected.
BTW, when my NOW broadband connection was installed recently, the technician said I needed to disable my norton internet security every time I would go online. Is this safe? What can I do about it?

The technician from NOW said my laptop was configured in such a way that Explorer cannot be opened without disabling the Norton internet security.
Everytime I connect, I can't open my browser if Norton is enabled. So what do you suggest?

Hey thanks for the info.
Another stupid question, so please excuse my ignorance, but when norton expires in a few days, will AVG offer the same (supposed--it is disabled when I'm out there))protection?
Any other free "wares" I can install to increase protection?
And yeah, the programs were pre-installed after I bought the laptop.

I replaced NAV with AVG when the norton stopped running because of a virus that got thru. I have been running AVG ever since. There are websites where you can run a free scan of your computer using other anti-virus companies wares. Do a google search , there are several. Once you decide to stay with AVG or XYZ you should uninstall norton - unless you like the idea of having a program running that isn't doing anything other than using up resources and occasionally reminding you that your subscription has expired.

AntiVir is rated a bit better than AVG by the tech press http://www.free-av.com/
