Not sure what species they are, but they can be found in the Sai Kung area. Occasionally, in summer, some of them weave webs across the footpath so you have to look ahead.
I remember once, a resident was in such a hurry to get past me up the footpath that he walked straight into one! His subsequent actions were most amusing.
They're not known to be poisonous but I would imagine they can inflict a nasty bite. Try throwing some tissue into their webs and see how they react.

If they are what I think they are, they are called Golden Orbs. They are harmless, if not a little backwards. In the springtime they come out into highly populated areas to string a new web to lay their eggs. Once they hatch, the stay there until all the little babies are big enough to go on their own. The are all over HK, Lantau, Midlevels, Sai Kung, etc. I am sure they bite, but don't all spiders for their protection? If you leave them alone, you will be able to see the progression of their hatchlings through the next month or so.

They're pretty cool up close. I've ended up with them in my hair while running and draped on the front of my mtn bike - fortunately I've never been bitten so can't say whether or not it hurts or whether they're poisonous as I've felt no ill effects so far....
