ORIGINAL POST

I am looking for a gift for my husband - a digiital SLR camera. I want to surprise him although he has expressed interest and would do a lot of research if he was buying himself - not sure where to start - any good review websites? I looked at canon (basic i think was 6780) and a Nikon the guy in the shop recommended canon as a good start (and more megapixels for the money)

any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Megapixels aint everything for sure; but it is something and storage is cheaper and cheaper so all things being equal, more is better. Since the user seems like an enthusiast, it would give more option for cropping and working with images (something which is more necessary when you shoot Digital SLR, to get good result).

Anyway, its a hobby. Compact cameras take great party shots and i would not drag my D70 around unless i felt like it suited occation, or it was necessary (or fun).

This is the site for digicam reviews and info, the curent top slr is the Canon EOS 30D, and if you look the current top five are all canons.

Bear in mind that the 30D is a high end camera and your husband might be just as happy with the Canon Digital Rebel XT , which is much cheaper.

Remember that the lense is almost as important as the camera, if you have a choice of lenses, buy the more expensive one :)

Pick the camera you like and go to the wanchai computer centre, compare prices and shop around, avoid shops on nathan road that have a lot of neon outside and offer really "cheap" prices.

Thanks both for your responses - i have looked at the d70 today and the canon 350 not sure which to go for but I will look at the reviews on the sites to get a view.

Note the D70 is the 'old' model so if they offer you that it should be at a discount. The latest model in that price range is D70S (D70 can be upgraded by software so not big difference).

The Canon in that price class looks better on paper but, see what others say, before deciding. Im happy with the D70.

If he's not a super serious photo fanatic, but does want an SLR rather than a point-and-shoot compact, then the Canon 350 is the one to get; it's right at the price/performance sweet spot. He'll be very appreciative.

I think Kodak is much better than cannon

A4xgr - er, pinkie's hubbie may actually you want to print some photos at some stage. The larger the image capture, the better quality the print, generally.

The difference between a 1.4 mp and a 5mp then becomes apparent.

Parksun - in the DLSR market Canon is much, much better than kodak - the lens choice and other features Kodak can't compete - don't see too many photojournalists using Kodak cameras these days.

Nikon and Canon are the two biggest players in the DLSR realm - safest to stick with one of them. They entry level cameras they both offer are very good for the price - just comes down to slightly different features.
