What is Crico used for? Is it like the copha that we use in Australia for choclate crackles?

I don't know what copha is, but I can tell you what Crisco is used for. Fundamentally, it's a saturated fat used for cooking, mostly in baking (more or less in place of butter because it's cheaper) or deep frying (doesn't burn so easily).

Crisco is a vegetable shortening. I've only recently started to use it - in cake icing/frosting (it is white and doesn't affect the colouring like butter does). It doesn't taste like much though so the frosting doesn't taste as good as when you use butter.
Americans tend to use it in other stuff like cakes, pies, cookies. It makes food flaky (similar to lard). But again, the flavour isn't there.
I've heard it is possible to use it in place of Copha but I haven't tried it. Those that have used it say that it doesn't taste as good.

I don't think copha has any flavour either. The choclate crackles recipe has coconut in it tho'. Georgie10 - Let me know if the crisco works. Thanks.

Copha goes hard when cooled - Crisco doesn't (Chocolate soggies??). Crisco is good to use in pastry - gives a better texture than butter and keeps the flavour for the filling.

The best thing to do with Crisco is to leave it on the shelf. It is a saturated fat, and very bad for your and your family's health.

Have to agree with Chris. It's better than the hog lard that many southern USA cooks once used to make their biscuits fluffy, but it's still a saturated fat with no nutritional benefit. If you aren't hooked on it already, don't start.
