Confused! - baby not gaining weight.

I've just read a book "My Child Won't Eat' by Carlos Gonzalez (bought from Paddyfield). It is very reassuring about the whole weight gain issue. He explains how and why babies weight gains slow down, especially around the time solids are introduced (less calories than breastmilk). Of course it is good to keep an eye on your baby's weight gain but it is also normal for the weight gain to slow down (or stop for a while).

Mrs. Miggins -

If he's active, peeing and pooing I wouldn't worry about it too much. I think we obsess over having "big babies" and there is a lot of research that shows that babies who are overweight when younger will do that when they are older.

If you and your husband are the "leaner" type - your baby will start to mimic that in the first year - so don't worry to much if all else is normal. If he's growing and happy - that's a good indication of his health.

My daughter grew very rapidly, and suddenly at 8 months, she dropped in the "percentile" ranking - she used to be in the 90th and then at her 8 month she had dropped to the 50th. It's just the way she is made I guess.

I agree with all the postings above. My son is very picky with what he eats and that makes me worried about his weight. But everytime i take him to a doctor, i get the same response. His weight is appropriate for his age/height. And he is active, healthy and building muscles. Fat is not to be desired. Healthy active babies are far better than "big babies". I am lean so i guess he got after me in terms of body type.

Their weight gain does slow down at times especially if they are active, I remember my eldest daughter weighed 18lbs at 6months,then started crawling at 6 months and had only gained another 3 lbs by 1 year. I wouldn't put so much emphasis on weight if he is still happy, healthy and doing the correct things for his age.

Seems that you are very concerned over the weight. It takes time especially when you started solids on 4-5 months old baby. You see they drink less milk though so the calories intake is lower. My 2 babies was really a good-eater especially my boy. He is now 7 years old already. Don't worry too much. as long as your son is alert, active and responsive. Just an advice growing babies need good carb, so if you can introduce vegs, like sweet potatoes, and greens and at a later stage fish and meat will be best.

if either Mrs. Miggins or Mummybee is interested in the superbaby foods book - i have it - and i've actually summarized on a word file which foods she recommends you introduce at which months. The preparation is pretty much all the same - steam, puree, freeze in ice cube trays. I loved the book, fed my daughter with it and had great luck with her - people to this day are still amazed at how well she eats. (I do think part of it is genetics as well as both her father and I LOVE and ENJOY food...) but she eats vegetables, will eat broccoli first over anything else at the table. But the most HELPFUL part of the book is which foods at which months. If you're interested, let me know - i'm happy to send it - especially since the book is hard to find in HK. (you can order from Amazon...)

Hi mummybee-

I meant I'd be happy to send the word file - not the book itself - sorry - I was so vague! I am seriously losing my mind. I'll send you the summary - the book is worth buying for sure! i'm really happy with it - it's just nice having the word file as a summary - especially if you know what the whole idea behind it is. Then you don't have to keep on trying to find the right page in the book. (One of the criticisms is that the book can be a bit difficult to use)

Ruth Yaron states that on this super baby food, your child will get sick a lot less -and I can seriously say, that my daughter gets sick far less than her playmates do. I do believe that the food does have some sort of impact on immunity.

hkchoichoi,

I'm due to have a baby late May/early June and so would be interested in the word file you talk about. I have an older child and while he eats alot of healthy food and is a big boy, he was (and still is to some extent) very picky about what he will or wont eat. Had pretty much exactly the same dinner for about a year between ages 1.5 to 2.5. Would rather avoid this with the next one!

Thanks.

Mrs Miggins - don't mean to take over your thread. I can't help as my boy gained so much weight that he is still above the 97th percentile (he's about 75th for height. While it's ok for now, I worry that he will be fat when he is older!!

dear hkchoichoi,

would love to receive your word file about that book, I would love to read it but in my situation (you know what I mean) it would be great help. Number "2" is almost 5 months and would be so nice to have all those information handy. Btw, how are you doing? last night was my first night since 3 weeks when "my trouble" slept through the night!!!!!I've change a bit rutine and I wonder if this is somehow helping. Cross fingers for tonight!

Mrs Miggins, I think your son is doing graet, have a little girl myself who is putting only 500g per month since 3 months but no body can believe it. She looks heavier, older then she is and is so strong. Well, is my number 2 so I think I'm a bit more relax. Good luck!

Sometimes we need to stop looking at the scales and look at the baby. If a baby is meeting developmental milestones, eating well, growing well within other perimeters such as head and length, sounds like he is doing fine. All children grow at different rates and do have periods of growth that may slow or plateau. Re-weigh again as advised by the Dr. to rule out a scale error.

My two kids are both 'petite' for their age yet eat like horses.

My 5 year old wears clothes aged 3 and my 3 year old wears clothes for 18month olds. They weigh 16kg and 12kg respectively and are both VERY healthy, active and bright.

I have given up listening to people ask me if they are ok and stopped worrying about whether there is something wrong, so Mrs Miggins, please do the same, your baby is perfect and is just not destined to be a big child, lucky baby!

Oh and during a check-up a well known doctor wanted to prescribe Zinc, as this helps increases a childs metabolism, i advised the doctor that it wasn't necessary and that my child ate 3 good meals a day and snacked twice a day.

I continue to breastfeed my son and he doubled his birthweight by month 3 and tripled by month 6. Breastfed babies are supposed to be bigger in the beginning than formula fed babies. At some point, breastfed babies lose their weight advantage but I thought it did not happen until one year or so. Also, they tend to look healthier and less bloated than formula fed babies.

Hi Mrs M. Apologies if this has already been answered as i havent read all the threads. I asked my little one's pediatrician the same question. He simply told me that bubs cant grow up and out at the same time. Your little man grew a few cms upwards so nothing to worry about. Makes sense huh?

Mummybee - have you tried her on (please forgive me) formula. Maybe your milk isn't filling her up as it used to and she needs something a bit more filling. I would also tend to not feed before bed until they have had solids on a regular basis for lunch and breakfast as i did this a few times with my first and she would wake up from her night sleep with terrible tummy ache.
