if these people can afford to ship (ie think services like four wind, links, sta fe etc) their things to their next destination - surely they can afford to ship their pet too...
i understand there are services here which would take care of most procedures and paperwork needed to transport a pet. so why don't they utilize these services?
hmmmmmmm

We left our dogs back home. We decided that our tiny flat is not suitable for 2 active labs who are used to running around. In our case, life here in HK for them will be miserable cooped up for long periods of time indoors.
When our lease expires, we are hoping to move to a bigger unit so we can ship our dogs to live with us.
I speak for myself as a dog-owner leaving our beloved pets--it IS heart-breaking not to have them with us here. I just hope the pet owners advertising their dogs/cats will not be pre-judged according to their posts. There are many, many reasons..

i agree with you cara... but if pet owners already know or have at least have an inkling that this situation could occur - why get a pet here in the first place?
i think the poster was querying about owners here who get pets in hong kong and then leave them when they go.
i understand that there are many many situations why people are unable to bring their pets with them when they leave - the question is why even bother getting a pet in the first place here in hong kong without at least considering if these pets can be relocated with them when and if ever their owners move.
pets are not furniture that can be advertised in the trading post when owners can't bring them along with them.

Ya, I felt for the dog too. If only we had enough space, would have called her in a heartbeat.
And Alibali, I understood clearly the nature of your post. I just wanted to point out that there are many permutations to an expat's situation and their dogs.
FYI, there's a similar post at Speakers, egged on too by the golden retriever pic..

that is exactly my point and what i am trying to drive at. This is not about judging anyone and their situation.
all i am saying is if one doesn't know what their situation is in 3, 6, 10 years time - shouldn't they have considered this scenario in the first place and consider the effects and consequences to their pet when they suddently have to move or be relocated or when their life circumstance changes?
as i said, why bother in the first place when you are clearly unsure of what to do with your pet when and if the time comes for you to leave.
if you leave after 14 years, and your cat is as old too... its chances of being readopted are slim.... and if you can't find a home one of the recourse is to give it to the SPCA.....
pets are for life. pets are for keeps.

Wiz Bang - would you leave a member of your family behind, after 14 years? We got 2 cats in Singapore, in 1991, off the streets too, for our 2 girls, one cat each. After 3 years we moved to HK, and moved our cats! Unfortunately, one died here of throat cancer. After 6 years in HK, we moved to Canada, and the cat moved too. A little after 2 and half years in Canada and we're off to Dubai. We're in Dubai just for a year and we have to move again - to HK. We were having trouble with the quaranteen here in HK, as there was no room for the cat to be put into quaranteen for 6 months, so we shipped the cat back to Canada to our oldest daughter. We wouldn't dream of leaving a member of our family behind!
The reason for this thread is why do people not take their pets and abandon them? because they are selfish. It's too inconvenient!!!! People are just to wraped up in their petty little lives sometimes. I must admit there are times you can't take a pet: like when we moved from Singapore in the 80's to Norway. We had a boxer, who would have to be quaranteened for 8 months. That would have been cruel, so we found a wonderful family for him.

As a dog owner, I don't think the word "pet" is appropriate to describe a member of a family. I think 'companion' is more appropriate, don't you think. It is not right to abandon a family member, totally out of order!

errrrr....lucilia i think you were addressing your comment to another poster.
i don't have a pet and if i do get a pet, i would ensure that it would be included in any of my future plans before getting one.
i love animals and i am unsure what will happen in the next few years...so that's exactly why i do not have a pet because i don't want them to undergo and suffer through an uncertain future.
