I was thinking of sending my 12 year old to Island School next September.
Any comments -(quality of teaching, amount of homework, etc.) from teachers, parents or students would be much appreciated.
Thanks to you all.

I am Island School alumni and although from many years ago, I plan to send my son back there when he reaches secondary school. I still have very fond memories of my teachers and days there!

Lately they have been having a lot of supply teachers for my 12 year old.
My older son was academically bright; so I was quite happy, but my younger son, not being so academically bright, I feel the support system is lacking. I don't see them pushing or encouraging him to do better ( after all the fees that I am paying!)

Dear gdp,
have you spoken to his teachers?
do you get regular updates on his performance, study habits at school, relationship with others etc.
what is the general attitude and work habits of the kids at the school?
are the kids nice and supportive of each other?
many thanks for your reply.

If your child is average or above average, I don't think you should worry. Both my kids love their school, it's just me being worried about my younger son.
There is absolutely no feed back from the teachers except the report twice a year and a parent teacher meeting once a year. No regular updates on how he is doing, I don't even know when and if they are having tests and if they are how much they have scored. I did not even see the test paper and one of the teachers told me that it was school policy not to send test papers home. Then how do I know what are his weaknesses. I had to give him extra help at home, I did see an improvement, but when I asked his teacher, they were not able to tell me if he had improved or not.
Again emphasising that if your child is average or above average, you should have absolutely no problem.

Dear GDP,
Once again, thanks for your reply.
What grades are your kids in?
The fact that you cannot see the test papers and not knowing when your child has upcoming tests must be unsettling for someone who is an involved parent.
How are you suppose to help your children?
Perhaps with more support your other two children could go from above average to exceptional.
Also, I was told that the kids just hang around the court yard for lunch and that there is no cafeteria. Do your kids complain that it is very hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter?
How much time do your children spend doing homework?

As I mentioned earlier, both my kids love their school. They have never complained against their school. They have never complained about the heat or cold.
They do have a cafeteria, but I'm not sure if they're allowed to eat there. I think they can eat in their form room; I'm not sure again. I usually pack the lunch and snack for my kids; so it's only occassionally that they eat from the cafeteria.
My younger son spends half an hour or less on HW each day. The older one being more responsible and in a higher grade does his work at his own pace. He being bright and more responsible is able to spend longer time at his work.

dear gdp,
i am happy to hear that your kids both going to school.
it's not easy find the right balance between the amount of work to give to kids and at the same time having like going to school.
thanks so much for your comments.
