Hi, I am expecting my first baby in about 2 weeks time. Some people have mentioned that you should wash the new baby clothes before they are first worn. Is this something that most of you have done? What detergent would you recommend to use that is safe for baby's skin?
Thanks!

yes, I always wash all the baby clothes before letting the baby wear it. If you knew how the clothing manufacturers treat those clothes before going inside the packaging... you would wash it more than once! I use Fileti (forgot the spelling) it's a baby detergent in a pink bag that is available from certain Park N Shops. It's almost $100.00 for a small pack. It's specifically for baby, sensitive skin.
Pigeon has also a bottle of baby detergent.

Yeah, we washed all of our baby clothes first. We used the Pigeon brand baby laundry powder. Buy it at Wing On or Bumps to Babes. Others use Persil or any other nonbio powder.
In general, I think it makes sense to wash any (baby or adult) clothes before wearing since garment factories are not necessarily the cleanest places in the world.

We use Dreft too, and I think it's great but it's hard to find. Rinses very clean and does really well on stain removal. The only place I know that carries it is Gateway in Sheun Wan.
ALternatively, you'd probably do just fine with most any detergent if you ran the clothes through a second rinse cycle. (maybe not if your child has eczema)
Just a note though, you may not want to get carried away and wash EVERYTHING you've bought or been given. If you're like us, quite a few items ended out unworn--wrong season or whatever--if they weren't washed, they can still make nice gifts for another little baby.

Whatever brand you choose, bear in mind that liquid washing detergent rinses out better than powder ones, & of course, it goes without saying, leave out the softener for the time being.

Thank you for your replies. I'll get washing!
