Air Conditioner Maintanence

2 of 3 of my A/C's don't really put out much cold air, and they are quite a bit noisier than the one that works properly. Our local handyman mentioned that they need to be cleaned, and said he can clean both for $600.

That seems like a lot, but I'm not sure what the cleaning involves.. If it involves taking them apart and dipping them in a cleaning solution, then that seems fair, but if they are going to just spray some cleaner in there or something, I can do that myself..

Anyway the quesiton is, how do you folks keep your A/C units functioning normally? I can see how a thorough cleaning could be involved, but I just want to double check with you guys first.

Thanks!

You can buy a can of the spray cleaner and try yourself. Maybe the Freon needs to be topped up as well. That will need to be done by a "competent" guy.

We paid HKD380 to have our living room a/c cleaned by a local handyman. They take out the whole a/c and take it away to have it cleaned. Then its returned later in the day placed back into its original place. So you're getting a good deal for 2.

Thanks for the advice! I'll go ahead and have them clean it. They said it wouldn't be much less to do 1 of them, so it seems like a good deal to do 2 at once :)

You pay for what you get... the manufacturers' engineers have special equipment/gas and drying techniques so the machines don't rust. The 300 dollar guys blast them (and periodically pedestrians) with a high pressure hose at the curbside in Sheung Wan (among other places). Maybe ask your chap if you can come and watch his precision cleaning technique...!

I'll ask what they do to clean them. This isn't a 'curbside' place though ;)

Looks like good advice in this thread. Can someone please recommend a good person for me to call for my air conditions? I live in Pokfulam. Thanks!
