freelancing on dependent pass

ORIGINAL POST

I'm trying to find out if anyone is in the situation as I am. Basically, I'm on a dependent pass that says I should not work, but I freelance as a photographer sometimes and would like to continue in HK as well. I've consulted PriceWaterHouse and they told me that "legally" I'm not allowed to. But the criteria of setting up a business to do it legally just doesn't seem feasible for someone who only works very sparingly. So my question is, are there any "illegal" freelancers out there?

I teach English as a second language to some local children, not legally. As long as people just pay you, and don't ask too many questions. It's probably more difficult if you're dealing with a big company, but not individuals.

Thanks for the information. At least I know I'm not alone on this.

unfortunately, the company that approached me for a job is pretty well known, so I don't think I can just deal under the table...

well, maybe they're will to get you just a work permit. Sometimes Immigration gives a special work permit for the time you're allowed to stay in HK. They did for me. Other than the children, I also work for the same company as my husband and teach English there. No fee either, it was free.

The good news is this will change in the next few months and ALL dependents will be allowed to work without authorization. A rare case of the government figuring out they did something dumb by changing the regulations and now have decided to change them back. Drop by Immigration House to see if you can get an exact date when you can go out freelancing...legally.
