Shanghainese/Sichuan Resto recommendation

Everytime we have guests, they want to be taken to an authentic Chinese resto.

We have a favorite resto specializing in Shanghainese cuisine called Wu Kong (in TST). We regularly order the Crystal Shrimp, Crispy Duck, Crispy Eel, Honey Ham with crsipy bean curd and bread, plus whatever vegetable is in season (winter melon is good).

Any other recommended restos that won't break the bank and what dish to order?

for XINJISHI they have more choice than WU KONG,with english menu.

for UNICORN you can try the shark's fin set dinner around $490 for 2 persons, its wonderful to me!(the portion of the full course dinner is quite many!)

XINJISHI is a great choice since it is a chain from Shanghai. I have not tried it here in HK but the Shanghai original restaurant is great. Xiao Nan Guo is also another restaurant with origin in Shanghai.

For the second half of your question, Chilli-Fagara on Gramham St/SOHO do a mean Szechuan menu. To sum it up, two words: HOT and NUMBING. Reminds me of my forays in Chengdu. I think their number is 28933330. Burn baby burn!

Bumpkin--

Was in Wanchai the other day and remembered your post. We tried 369 Shanghai and loved everything that we ordered. They have an English menu which really helped, and a captain waiter who spoke and understood English, too. All in all a yummy experience (we didn't mind the ambience--or rather, the lack of it)

Thanks!

You can't go wrong wih Chongqing Szechuan Restaurant on Elgin Street in Soho. Phone number is 2810 8868. Good food, friendly owners, and it won't break the bank.

Just went to Shu Hu Ju a few days ago, I must say that I was not too impressed by the food. The portion was small for what they charged. The Chilli Chicken came in a huge plate but you would have to do a treasure hurt for the chicken pieces as they were buried in lots and lots of Szechuen peppers.

Primrose, I agree that quality is more important than quantity. However, I wouldn't say that the food at Shu Hu Ju was of the highest quality I've ever tried. I had the same dish (Chilli Chicken) at the Szechuen restaurant on Elgin Street (can't remember the name) and I think the restaurant on Elgin did a better job. The other dishes that I ordered at Shu Hu Ju were mediocre at best.
