leaving HK - relocation costs

For moving the contents of a 2 bedroom, 900 to 1000 sq ft flat, which apparently will almost fill a 20' container, we are receiving quotes in the range of $37,000 to $47,000 for a door to door relocation to Brisbane. These quotes are from smaller outfits. Insurance is an additional 3.5% of value.

Is $37k about as low as you can expect to go, without getting rid of a lot of stuff? Is the DIY option seriously worth considering given this sort of money, even though there is supposedly substantially more hassle, stress and time involved? Thanks.

Can anyone comment on what it should or has cost to relocate back to Australia?

The ocean freight cost of a 20' container alone is expensive (I agree, about US$2000 including port fees etc). Then you have to pay for packing / transport in HK and delivery / unpacking in Brisbane. HK$37 - 47k is not alot of money considering all that's involved. Don't do it yourself, it's too much work and the customs officials will have a field day with you in Australia.

Thanks for this. Although the convenience of an all-in-one service is preferable, paying 3x the cost of the container alone still seems like a very heavy hit. And then there's the additional $10k or so to fully insure.

weeell if you don't want to pay - don't take so much stuff back - you need to weigh up the cost of shipping vs replacing what you have with new when you get back home....If you cut down to about 20K would you be able to replace what you are not taking back with the saved $4500 Australian dollars?

or if you left everything behind except the clothes on your back - $7800AUD dollars worth of stuff to replace a whole house - I don't think so.
