Unlucky nos:
4 - Sounds close to "die" in Cantonese. (Interesting enough, it is lucky to Shanghainese. The car plate no. 4 belongs to a Shanghainese tycoon here.)
7 - Many rituals for dead people relates to 7. Eg paying worship session every 7 days for 7 times.
So if you are really into this kind of belief, do avoid these 2 nos.
Lucky nos:
3 - Sounds close to "life", "lively", "active", "energetic". 3 & 8 are the top most welcome ones.
6 - A never-ending no. (Try divide 10 by 6. Though 3 & 9 have the same effect, but they are already given other meaning.)
8 - Sounds close to "prosper", "blossoming", & most important of all - "getting rich".
9 - Same sound as "long-lasting".
Generally speaking, people prefer even nos than odd nos. Eg if you go to a wedding banquet & pay gift in cash, make it 300, 500, 800. (Of course, more is welcome.) And if in a funeral, it's proper to make the sympathy money (? sorry don't know the Western equilavent term) 201, 301, 501. You see?
Being a local-born Chinese, I notice that HK are still into it - at least it has comforting effect among people. More serious believers are businessmen, besides middle-aged & above.
Hope this short info helps.
