Today is a sad day for me. I am asian, 5 feet4. In the past I was usually about 49-50kg. So with my love for food and all things new I have indulged and plead guillty to the sin of gluttony.
I am now 53 kg.
Frankly I look fine and still wear the same size jeans size 8 which I bought from target 4 years ago.
What I CAN'T stand is the pressure for asian women to be fashionably thin. OK so I am not THAT thin anymore. I have something to grab. I have a nice ass, some spare tyre for winter and my rack actually deserves a bra for once.
Since Chinese New Year (the dreaded time where you meet relatives etc) I've been getting comments like " Hey you're fatter already-be CAREFUL". (said in such ominous tone that you're thinking that you're about to step into a landmine).
My guy has been really great about it-no comments at all. But I can't help but feel really affected and down each time I get that "watch out for fat warning'
Today, I took a taxi ride back from this young cab driver. He started complimenting me with the usual are you of mixed ethnicity, you look very pretty (yeah right bla bla), then he said, BUT, let me tell you something, you're body's a bit big. You need to lose 2 kg.
WHAT!
Idiot.
At the end of the taxi ride, he asked me if I could call him in the future for future taxi rides. Like I would!
Now I want to crawl into the bed with my fat self and die. But guess what-I am hungry.

One day, was as u said in that omnious tone was reminded of the weight ( no , am not chinese), and suddenly after all that blabber, a small under the breath comment was( which i am sure for meant for own self rather than for me) but u are curvy. I was like, alright so this is the problem.
Only people with a bit of flesh to claim for be curvy, isnt it? you need something to form the curves and U have it.

Balzac, don't worry about it! I have this sh*t thrown in my face all the time. Shopping in Australia, I'm normally medium or large, in Spore, sorry...no size...in other words, hey fat lady, you're too fat that I can't get you to wear anything! And once was having a foot massage and the guy massaging my foot said to me, err, you know that you need to lose weight? But I think I'm fine, I'm not obese....just a little chubby and that's all...

I love shopping in HK and I walk into a shop - "Sorry lady no fat size!" - hilarious - how honest they are here. (But no good for self esteem!)
My friend (Taiwanese American) was having dinner with another couple friends of theirs (HK chinese) when her friend said to her over the dinner table - "Whah I don't know why your husband is still with you - you are so fat and ugly!"

You sound normal and healthy. I hate that my chinese relatives are so eager to throw in 'You've put on weight' 'Look at those chubby arms' 'Your face is so fat now'. Either ignore it, or point out flaws that they have, because if they're going to be rude, then so can you. It's not reassuringly honest, it's being ignorant and a social retard.

I am 168cm with 53kg,but my boyfriend and friends keep on asking me to eat more to gain weight.I enjoy that.
Don't worried how they look at your body and get upset,that's not the reason why are here,I believe u are in world for sth else,not that.

Don't take medication - it is definitely not good for you.
You height and weight sound fine. There are so many stick figure girls around in China, still complaining they are "fat" it makes me really sick. If this is what people are comparing you too, be strong and ignore them, these girls are too skinny and downright unattractive.
My 4 y old tells me her teacher told her it is "not good to be fat" I wanted to murder this woman, my daughter is already such a fussy eater! My Chinese mother-in law is not better, carefully skimming fat off the soup I give my girls as if it is poison. My girls are healthy for sure, but on the slim side. At 3 and 4, they should know about being fat?
This nonsense should stop! It won't but at least we can stop it ruining our happiness.

That's not fat!! I am 5'4 and weight 60kg, everyone calls me fat and I gets hounded by sales ladies trying to sell me diet packages in the street. now 35 years old, single and even my mum tells me to lose weight and find a man. But I'm happy now, eat whatever I like and full of freedom. Who cares what people say, it's your body and life! In England I am considered as average and curvy. No point being skinny, depressed and ugly. BTW, the shops here really do small sizes.

in hk i feel fat (and am constantly told that by really thoughtful chinese) but when i go home to visit family i see what my sisters and friends are wearing there and i think i could never wear that in hk i think its really sad. even if i wear a singlet top in summer some of my chinese collegues are like "ohhh so sexy" but you know its not in a good way. when this is something that everyone wears back home! its crazy!

no worries, i am 165 cm and 62kg, at least...hong kong people are just blunt and rude, especially the Hongkie men, they always like to critise, especially physically rather than mentally, shallow, that's it.

Balzac, You must be kidding!!...at 5ft 4 inches who weigh only 53kg. Sound fine to me.
Anyway, health is more important. Remember that you have to feel good to look good.

pardon my ignorance but it seems to be an asian thing. i noticed there's a huge fad of losing weight in hk. i do feel fat when in hk, but it seems to be an accepted thing considering i'm a westerner.
but seriously at 5 feet 4 and 53kg i don't see how that could be classed as being fat. i'm 5 feet 2, and weigh about 60. when i weighed 55 everyone thought i was too skinny. but then again i've gotten heavier because of exercise and gaining muscle.
you just can't win, either you get told to eat more or you're told you're fat. very frustrating.
as long as you fit into your clothes and feel good then it shouldn't matter what other people say.

Give no thought about what the locals think of your size. I think many are simply brainwashed by all those slimming ads on the buses and in magazines. I had local colleagues who would weigh themselves everyday right after lunch! Another colleague was quite tall but wants to weight less than 100 pounds, which seems to be the magin number. Her period lasts one day per month. Why would anyone consider that healthy? And frankly, your body is your business and no one else's. Tell them to mind their own business.

Well do you think you're fat? It's all in your own mind.. Stop worrying about what other people think.. just worry about how YOU want to look, despite what other people want or consider 'normal'. Sorry - but 'normal' is such a bs word as there are SO many factors to conisder.
If you think you're a little bit chubby/skinny/flabby whatever... then do something about it. But only if YOU want to do something about it. But don't judge yourself by how other people judge you - YOU are the most important judge :)
