Car on road costs

ORIGINAL POST

We are moving to Hong Kong soon and would like to buy a second hand car (7-8 seater). I have looked on this site and refererred links to get an idea of prices.

Could some one point me in the right direction for on road costs:

1. the extras on top of the listed purchase price to get the car on the road (legally!)

2. the annual costs

Thank you!

Actually the tax for an engine up t2.5 ltrs is $5,700. Insurance depends on type and age, my car is old now so we only pay 3rd party and it costs $1,700 a year. In the 5 places we've lived in in here we've never had to pay for car parking, in the 2 flats it was negotiated in with the rent, in the 3 houses it is free. Also in most places now if you're shopping or going to the cinema you can get up to 2 hours free parking. Car park charges don't seem to have gone up in the 9 years we've been here. We have a great chap who services our car and takes it for its MOT every year, he's honest and reliable and is less than half the price of most garages. There probably isn't that much difference to running a car here as in the UK now.

I've driven cars here with no tax of up to about a week until I could get to the tax place, they ask you if its been driven on the road, you say yes then they charge you extra on the tax to cover the weeks delay, it was about $150 for the week or something. So if the tax has only just run out there shouldn't be too much of a problem driving it to get the mot than to the tax place. Not sure how it would work if the tax ran out ages ago though.
