late talker - worried

Hi. I understand your concerns too. My little girl is also almost two. She's 19 months now and also has about 15 - 20 words at the most.... not that clear by the way. She can say half of them clearly but not the rest. I'm just as worried... especially when interviews for kindies are supposed to be later this year.

I took her to the clinic last month and they are not worried. My cousin's son and my maid's nephew who are a few months older can't say much either. I have another two friends whose children are in the same predicament.

But then there are those who can speak so well. My aunty's grandson has just turned two and he can recite nursery rhymes and can even argue back. Another boy at my little girl's playgroup can already say his ABCs and he's also just turned two. Another friend's little girl started speaking heaps a few months before she turned two as well.

All kids are different but it doesn't help when interviews start so early. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they'll catch up in the next few months.

Sorry I can't help much except to let you know that I'm in the same boat.

Hi Visitor -

my daughter is also almost two - and until about 2 weeks ago - probably only 10 words...I suspect being bilingual has something to do with it (Korean at her pre school, English at home.) But suddenly - she will NOT BE QUIET...she talks, babbles all the time. She's added about 50 words in the past two weeks -colors, feelings, belongings, pain, both in English and Korean...it happened suddenly - exponentially and to my pleasant surprise.

the key is to continually talk to your child, slowly, and give them opportunities to respond. There is a pretty interesting book called "How Babies Talk" by Golinkoff that you might find interesting. According to the scale of "normal" your child is well within range. Some children just verbalize later - and shouldn't be a concern. If he understands what you are saying, then talking isn't far behind.

Hi Visitor,

My daughter is pretty much like HKChoichoi's as she didn't really speak much before she turned 2. Hence the tantrums and frustration. Also being the older child does not really help as they do not have peers around them to learn from. But within 2 weeks of starting school she became a different child, more independant and confident. Her vocabulary improved so much within days! Don't be disheartened. He'll be fine. My 2nd child (22 months) speaks so much but compared to my 1st, we were totally worried just like you. And some people also say that boys are later talkers too.

Hopefully your son is just a late talker. However there is no real way to know this until he starts talking. I've been through this with my son. He's now 2 years, 8 months and has been in speech therapy for nearly a year. We still don't have a definite diagnosis yet. He's just starting to talk a lot more although he omits a lot of initial consonants and his vowels are still a bit "off".

If you're getting stressed about this, I would recommend getting your son's hearing tested first. (A speech therapist won't evaluate your son until you've done this to rule out any hearing loss.) Joyce Tang at Adventist was very good with my son.

Does your son babble? Can he imitate funny faces? Can he blow bubbles or blow out birthday candles? (My son still does not imitate faces and didn't start blowing out until 4 months ago.) Does your son imitate animal sounds?

Wishing you all the best. Hope your son is talking up a storm soon.

Vistor,

Those are excellent signs. My son didn't babble much at all and lost some of the words he had. He couldn't imitate animal sounds or blow out at all. I don't think you have much to worry about. It sounds like your son should start talking when he is ready. Hang in there!

Dont worry about your kids not talking much. They will at their own time & pace.

Couldnt agree with Ruth more....talk a lot with your kid, dont talk baby language much & get them to reply to your Q's as much & often as possible.

My daughter was speaking fluently by the time she was 1yr 8 months. They all are really different. They are comfortable not talking now so wont bother to. Once you coax them into it, they will take over eventually & then they just dont stop!!!

Dont worry too much about it...all the best :)
