Thinking of going for 4 nights soon - any recommended places to stay - not too expensive, preferably right on a beach

Depends on whether you prefer a lot of nightlife (but also more crowded and chaotic) or more of a local flavor.
Chaweng has a beautiful beach and a lot of nightlife but I prefer Lamai, which is the second largest tourist area. Lamai also has a nice beach and you can dine literally with the waves lapping at your feet. Try Aloha Hotel right on the beach - about HKD450/night/room or even cheaper is Golden Sands for HKD200/night/room. If you've a larger budget, there are a lots of nice places but the two I mentioned have bungalows on the beach if I remember correctly.
