Menstruation reduces milk supply?

I am not sure if menstruation reduces milk supply but just wanted to let you know that even though they say exclusively breastfeeding delays menstruation it varies for every person. I exclusively breastfed but my periods started just 3 months after delivery. I was shocked..I was hoping 6 months at least ! But had no trouble keeping up my supply. Don't stress too much as that definitely affects your milk supply. Just continue feeding and relax. Your supply may have gone down because your baby is taking more solids - something to think about.

Agree wtih BW. My periods returned after 5 months - but I successfully breastfed until 14 months. You may feel your supply dropping since your baby is taking solids - and at around 8 months, your baby is getting a fair amount of nutrtion from solids. Keep drinking water, try the mothers milk tea, and if you're adventurous you can try seaweed soup - or other confinement foods!

Yah, I second the the advice to drink more fluid and try not to stress. It has been hot and your body loses more fluid than in winter, so be sure to drink those 8 glasses of water a day! As long as baby is nursing regularly, she will get what she needs. But as she eats more solids, she'll gradually lose interest and your supply will gradually go down. If you want to BF more, offer breast before solids. If you are trying to wean, offer solids before breast. Some babies wean earlier than others as a matter of their personal preference!

This is an interesting thread - especially BW because I have the same experience and thought it was very unusual.

My period came back at about 10-11 weeks after birth.

I am exclusively breast feeding.

He slept through from 11pm to 6am for 3 nights, then the next day - boom, period arrived.

He did not sleep through again regularly, just on and off. But now has done 7 nights.

I thought it might have been a fluke, but now it is exactly one month later, and I have my period again...

ugh.

It just started this morning, so far milk supply good - but will let you know if I see it going down. I am also paying attention to if he is eating a lot or not. The first time he didn't eat much - but there were other factors going on (I was a bit unwell, he just started sleeping more, etc...)

The first period that came back at before 3 months was very very heavy, and my supply was low and he was eating little. This might have been due to other factors, not just my period.

Now I am on my second period, it is not heavy just normal/light, and my supply is fine. He pulls back sometimes, but is then right back on eating away - so he seems fine with it now.

As you have now introduced solids it is normal for your period to return. Often you milk supply goes down when you begin to wean as the baby does not require as much. It might be advisable to go to a well baby clinic.
