Treatment of women

Hi girls

My boyfriend has been offered a great job in Shanghai and we would both love to go, but I'm a bit worried about what it's like living in China as a woman?

I'm 32 years old, smart, sassy and friendly, with a fair amount of world travel (Europe only, never been to Asia). I currently teach maths in year 12 and also just completed a phd in maths/physics. I am Australian.

I'd look at working as either a teacher or for a corporate company using my maths. Not sure yet. I really love teaching but might do the corporate thing and chase some dollars while we're over there. Never worked for a bit corporate company so I'm not sure what to expect there.

Anyway, I've heard that the women are not listened to as much as men and elders in the workplace. Is this true? I would hate for people to nod yes to me at work but really be ignoring me.

Also, how do you all feel you're treated just going about your daily lives in China?

Finally, do you find that the locals are friendly and welcoming, or are they suspicious of expats?

Any advice would be welcome. I'm really 50/50 on whether to go to Shanghai or not. I might be letting a great opportunity slip for some possible misconceptions I have.

Thanks,

Tiga

you've answered your own question: you WILL be missing a great opportunity. your experience will be what you make of it. i strongly recommend leaving your misconceptions at home, and coming to asia with an open mind. best of luck and enjoy your time here.

I think you'll enjoy your time there. Shanghai is also full of expatriates, just like HK. I know it's not nice to say this but Chinese generally "look up" to expatriates (by that I mean, Westerners) so I don't think you'll find yourself not being listened to.

I think women in China have better chances of being successful than in the West. They are more aggressive here and definetely want to succeed. I think you will find that you are more in competition here.

I have been in Shanghai for 5 years working as a manager in a manufacturing environment. Myself and my partner came for my job and we love it. I never worried about being a women in the workplace in Shangha or anywhere else, sure everywhere in the world there are some biggots, thats life. Shanghai is a fair place for men and women, if you are prepared to have an open mind and see that behaviour is more about the cultural differences -and that both men and women have to get used to, then you cannot fail to be drawn into a thriving city with so much buzz and enthusiasm you wont want to go home. Life is too short for regrets...I can guarantee if you do not take this opportunity you will regret it because all you will hear in the future is china this and china that...and it will be YOU who decided not to be part of it. Dont miss this chance, just say yes.

Shanghai is a good place for women, but your results are going to be more varied if you go anywhere else. The city I'm in, they don't have much contact with foreigners, and women don't have it so great. Comments and harassment wherever I go.
