My family and I will be moving to Hong Kong this summer and we are thinking of living in Sai Kung or Clearwater Bay. My office will be in Kowloon (near the old airport). Does anyone have advice or comments to share?

Moved to Clearwater Bay after 6 years in the city, best thing I ever did! Esp if you like the outdoors etc! You don't have to spend $70K per month - YIKES! If you have that $$ lucky you. You can get a decentplace for $30K if you look around. Try agent Danny 9745 9988, he is great! Tell him Michael gave you his no.

Must have a car, but they are cheap too, I picked up a Peugeot 407 for $25K off Asia xpat!

Thanks everyone, this is VERY helpful. Two questions: 1. Our child is 2.5 years old, are there several options for day care? 2. Is it easy to buy a car and are you allowed to ship a left side (or whatever the term is) car.

Yes there are, if you have children do not hesitate about living in the area.

Bring over a car? Btw we drive on the right side in HK and cars are such good value, leave your Cadillac behind, sounds like an expensive hassle and probably not allowed to drive a left side anyhow.

$70,000 - man that is high rent for Sai Kung - I have a 2100 place with a pool, 3,000 sq ft garden and a car park for $39,000 - would probably be going up to 49,000 if we were here for another contract. You can some nice places for reasonable rent out in the Northeast!

You can pick up cars cheap as chips if you are not too fussy, and there are a number of pre schools in the area - day care - most people rely on live in domestic helpers as there is no day care structure in HK for non chinese non welfare recipients.

To get to Kai Tak area - 15 mins by car, 25 by public transport from Sai Kung or Clear water bay.

Rents have definately gone up in Sai Kung/Clearwater Bay. Ours has just gone up from $41k to $53K, and that was with 3 months negotiating. I've looked at 2 village houses in the last few weeks, one was asking $50k and one $55k. Saying that if you look around you can still get a very decent place for $30-35k, less if you only need 3 bedrooms. You need to budget around $5k a month to run a car, inc petrol, tax, insurance, carparks etc. Our family would easily spend that or more on public to get around. There are several preschools and kindys in the area, New Song, Sai Kung PPA and Abacus Kindergarden. I think they all start from age 3. There's also several supermarkets in the area, Wellcome in Sai Kung is good, and PNS in Clearwater Bay. Jusco in Hang Hau is quite good too and not too far to drive. Sai Kung also has good restaurants, pubs, bakeries, butchers, hardware store etc. Plus a public swimming pool and library. Beaches nearby (clearwater Bay) and walks in the country park. I've lived in several places in HK but have been out this way for 4 years and wouldn't move anywhere else now.

Sorry oldhand, that was my mistake, I was unclear in my question. I was referring to the side the steering wheel is on, not the side of the road where one drives. Thanks to you and everyone for your kind help. We are now looking forward to the move even more now that we are clear on these issues. Enjoy your three day weekend.

We live in Clearwater bay with a 2.5 year old, and there is a nice kindergarten 2 minutes away. We pay only 7,000 $!!!! for a really nice flat with 3 bedrooms, beautiful seaview and 2 floors. So you can definately find any price range here. Just depends on whether you want to live in a quieter Chinese village setting, or a main xpat village- which ups the cost by quite a bit. There is a grocery store that caters to xpats, and buying a car is insanely cheap here. We have 2 cars and most places here include parking. The drive to basically anywhere on the island is less than half an hour. There are fabulous running trails and gorgeous mountain biking and hiking terrain right out your door. It is FAB! Good luck.

We're out here too and really like it. BTW, we have a friend who is looking for a friends/playgroup for her 2 1/2 year old child; let us now if you'd like to do the same when and if you move to the area. Rgoodwin, you too. : )

Why would anyone want to live in midlevels when they can livein Sai Kung? As for Repulse Bay, there's nothing there apart from a nice view out your window. And hard to believe I know but not everyone works in Central!!!
