Does anyone know if the world cup will be shown on local tv here or should i get cable tv so that i can watch it?

TVB and ATV are close to an agreement with Cable, so SOME matches will be shown, HURRAH. SCMP is running an article about this today!

I just spoke with CableTV on this same topic. For those of you who choose to only install CableTV for the World Cup, here is the breakdown I received:
600HKD for installation (non-refundable)
338HKD per month for the standard channels including channel 62 for watching the WorldCup
Plus, so sort of promotion that will give you free HBO for a few months
All this WITHOUT a contract, so it can be cancelled with 1 month's notice.
