FREE IMMUNISATIONS?

Is it possible to get free immunisations here. Moved from Oz and my baby has had the 6 months jabs and is now due for the MMR. The last lot were very expensive and I wondered if there was the equivalent of community centre where you can receive free vaccinations as the doctors all seem to charge here - can anyone help?

Thanks

MHCC - you do have to pay $10 HK (oh the big bucks) for registration. There is a whole slew of MHCC - all throughout HK. I went to the one in Central. (western Central) My daughter got all her jabs there - and if you are a HKID holder, paying your HK taxes you are entitled to this service. i'd check the hospital authority website. www.ha.org.hk

Hi Skippy

Just be mindful that the vaccinations available in the public health system in HK, do NOT replicate the Australian child vaccination schedule. eg HIB is mandatory in Aust, and not offered in the public system in HK. Same with the pneumococcal vacine. Plus there are other differences.

I don't think the HK govmt jabs are free if your baby is not born in HK. Don't take my word for that though - best to check.

Yes re ID card, but it's the adults who have the ID card, not the baby. They were very interested in my baby's birth certificate, I remember that.

You need to ensure that when you get the jabs that baby is not suffering from a temp, sniffly nose and that their breathing is normal - basically healthy.

I am not sure that are too thorough in the wellness checks before they jab at the clinics - they are a great service though.

As children go through school, they are given free jabs as well - whether they are born in HK or not, so it may not matter.

Thanks guys for all your info, I rang up my nearest MHCC yesterday and it was a rather 'challenging' call. The lady couldn't understand english so a nurse called me back and it was very hard work trying to establish my son's eligibility although I explained that my husband and I had HK ID cards and that children didn't require one. She ultimately asked for a copy of my son's passport to be faxed through to verify so hopefully it will be sorted out!

Many thanks again.

Your baby's dependent visa should be valid for the next 6 months. Otherwise they will charge you for the immunization. I have my 1st appointment at Ap Lei Chau Clinic this Saturday, so I can give feedback about their service by then. I'll try to post another message here after the check-up.

Thanks again, I had a call yesterday from the nurse at the clinic after receiving the fax with my baby's passport visa, she said it was fine and made the appointment for Friday. Am a bit scared about the MMR jab because of all the controversy but am sure I'm worrying about nothing! Thanks again all of you for your very helpful input. Have a good evening!
