Hi,

some basic questions.. just moved to HK, and need some guidance as to food prep, mainly washing vegetables etc... what do i really need to do? And are the wet markets the best place to buy my fresh greens etc... i love to cook, and prefer lovely fresh ingredients of course!

Fresh Chinese greens in the wet markets come from China - everything else is airfreighted from overseas so not as fresh. Although the government tries to monitor the level of pesticides on Chinese veggies, it is not always successful. Wash very well (make sure you get to the middle of the pak choi) and cook well.

You can get some fruit and vegetable wash at the supermarket to put in the water when you soak them (in the same area as dishwashing detergent).

Actually it's not just the greens at the wet market that come from the mainland. Lots of vegetables at the supermarket come from there - broccoli, tomatoes, beans, capsicums, zucchini ('jade melon').

If you're worried about pesticides etc, the organic veg from Organic Living is really good. They fax you a list every Monday, Wed, Friday of which veg they have, then you pick it up the next day from one of their pick-up points. To be added to their fax list, email your fax number to: info@organicliving.com.hk

To see if they have a pick-up point near you, see
