Housing Sticker-Shock!!

ORIGINAL POST

We viseted apartments on HKG Island and were shocked by the value for money. Is there any way to get into a new/fairly new building with good facilities and 4 bedrooms for 60K or under? We have yet to visit kowloon or NT, but are a bit concerned we will be able to find something decent.

Imagine what the rest of us without any housing allowance, let alone $60K, have to live in! HK is the most ridiculous property market of any "developed" country.

U can get very large, clean and tidy apaerments and houses in the NT for anything between 20K and 50K.

Gold Coast have seafront houses starting from about 40K, so take a look.

Rents are starting to rise big time due to rising interest rates, higher purchase prices - so you may find foolonahill that what you signed your lease for last year will have gone up significantly this week, so the original poster may not get what you paid for for the same price.

Pekingman06 you may want to look across the way at Kowloon side - if you want high rise living the Waterfront and associated towers are pretty good, there is also the apartments near the sheraton hotel (what are they called???) if you want a bit more space head out to Hong Lok Yuen, or Clear Water bay where for your budget you will be able to get a house with a garden. A longer commute to central but you liuterally leave the rate race behind when you move out of it!

The problem with "new" in HK is the efficiency rate. Baguio is older but has facilities (outdoor pool, gym, playground) and you should be able to get 2000+ sq ft for $50-55,000.

It depends a bit what you mean by four "bedrooms". In newer HK developments, only the master bedroom is large enough for a queen size bed: the other three rooms will be two metre squares so, unless you remove the door permanently, you can only put a kid's bed in them (and forget about a wall-length wardrobe).

If you want four "real" bedrooms on the Island, you will have to look at older buildings like Baguio, or the standalones on Pokfulam Road.

Ok - so there is some sanity in this place after all....thanks for the info. I just know that in the large company that my ever lovin works for, housing allowances are based on the mean amount they are paying out for rent (and they have thousands of rents and mortgages to pay!) - it has been progressively going up $1000 for the past few months - indicating that rents are going up significantly overall.

I personally think that 60K is enough to get a decent 4-bedroom apartment on HK Island. Just get in touch with enough agents and visit as many apartments as you can.

Even 25K+ or so can get you a 3-bedroom apartment (rooms are not big) in Cherry Crest, a fairly new building in Midlevels.
