Szechwan Pepper

OK, my wife had a long conversation with a spice merchant for you today (she loves finding out about anything to do with food!). There are three types of Sichuan pepper:

1) not in stock - tiny, like the smallest Thai peppers;

2) called "cow horn" pepper, the size of a lady's little finger;

3) called "lantern pepper", the size of a small tomato.

They also had several other sacks of dried peppers on display, some of which looked lethal.

This retail and wholesale shop is called Yuan Heng Spice Co at 19 Tung St, Sheung Wan. This is a tiny alley.... walk out the back of Sheung Wan market (not Western Market), cross Queens Rd West and look for a tiny alley with an overhead sign saying "Cambridge Medical", and that is Tung St: the shop is a one minute walk up the hill on your right.

Tel is 2543 8555, but they don't speak a word of English.
