Hi
I have a suede sofa at home and my cat keeps scratching on it. She's got a scratching post and i wonder if anyone tries the spray? Does it work?

Wellcome sells a Japanese brand of scratching post made from corrugated cardboard. My cat used to ruin my leather sofa but hasn't touched it once since I bought her one of these. I leave it on the floor because she seems to like stretching horizontally while she scratches.

All of the above, plus one more! Get a scratching post. (Or two or three -- find her one or two that she really enjoys playing with!) Spray the "no no" spray. Use the can filled with coins to scare her when she's doing something bad. And last but not least, use human finger nail clippers to trim her claws. Any vet or animal groomer can show you how to do this -- just trim the nail part and don't clip into the vein that runs down half the length of the nail. But anyway, trimming claws will do the same thing she is trying to accomplish by wearing her nails down scratching -- it's one thing you can do that will REALLY reduce the scratching urge. It's not 100%, and it is a lot of trouble, but it really helps. If you have trouble holding her for this, wrap her up tightly in a towel so all that is exposed is one paw at a time. Like a straightjacket. If you start them off as kittens getting used to this and a bath, it's easier, but they will get used to it and besides, you only have to do it every couple of months.

My cat likes imp's suggestion of the corrugated cardboard scratching box. To get your cat started on a new scratching box or post, rub some catnip on it. In addition to this, you should also buy special cat nail clippers and get your cat used to getting his nails clipped. Regardless of what your cat uses to scratch on, their nails are always sharp. My feeling is that you are doing the cat a favor by clipping them -- just the very tips.
