Can someone tell me up to what age you can claim your children as dependents? Also do you have to provide birth certificates etc or has all of this been checked out when they research your backgrund for the ID card.

My understanding is you can claim if they are:

- under 18; or

- 18-25 in full time education; or

- over 18 but physically/mentally unable to work.



I believe you do not need to submit evidence with your form, but they can spot check you for 6 years afterwards.

According to the IRD website:


'Child' refers to:


* the child of you or your spouse or former spouse; or

* the adopted child of you or your spouse or former spouse; or

* the step-child of you or your spouse or former spouse.
