I have to agree about the safety of raw milk here in Beijing. I haven't found any yet, but am not sure how good I would feel about it.
My son used to drink raw milk before we moved here, but has been switched to the pasteurized stuff. It seems to have a bit of a burnt taste, but he doens't complain - just drinks a bit less.
Let me know if you do eventually find a good source. Natasha

Boy, it will be an experience. Where do you live now? Best to be very flexible and open minded, because it's very likely there will be a lot of things you won't be able to "find." Enjoy the Chinese food and learning about Chinese medicine! My favorite restaurants are the vegetarian ones associated with Buddhist temples.

Raw milk has the potential for several infections:
Tuberculosis
E Coli: Certain strains can cause HUS which could develop to kidney failure and death (for the Americans, the Jack In the Box burger thing)
Listeria monocytogenes: A cause of neonatal meningtis but rarely seen after the first month because of the pasteurization process.
The risks are very small but finite. It does taste better though.

I agree with Ruth. I grew up on a farm drinking raw milk. When I buy even pasteurized milk in China, I close my eyes and try not to think about what may be in it -- chemicals, hormones, pesticides. (If you ever see the conditions animals are kept in and the way they are slaughtered here, it will provide a big incentive to become vegan.) I buy vegetables labeled "organic" in a big supermarket, but I have no idea what that really means, since labels in general mean nothing here. As far as labels go, I can also go to the wholesale shoe market and purchase 1,000 pair of shoes that have a designer label and say "Made in Italy." Unless you grow it yourself, you don't really know what's in it or where it's been. Don't underestimate what a big problem this could be if you are really, seriously focused on specific dietary requirements.

The devils are in the details. The numerator is not the issue. It's the denominator.
The article presented are opinions of a few and not the general biology community. There is no "conspiracy" in the scientific commnity. I consider myself such a member of a community and no one has yet to offer me a decoder ring. If you want to convince me (not that anyone would have any interest in doing so) cite me a peer review paper in a respected scientific journal. One with the standard components of a scientific paper, which none of those articles have.
As for disease in unpasturize milk, I'm sure you're missing at least one. The one patient that I personally saw in California who got listeria meningitis from unpasturized milk. (Actually if you want to be nitpicky, I did not see it, what I saw was listeria meningitis from unpasturized cheese).
