We live in a town outside of Harbin in NE China. Our six month old son and I will be accompanying my husband on a work visit to Shanghai. Is anyone able to tell me where the best places are to buy ordinary western-style baby clothes in Shanghai?

Try this 2 places.
1. Xu Jia Hui Metro station
shopping Mall : Grand Gateway
Baby items : level 3
2. Next to JinAn Metro station
Shopping Mall : JIU GUANG CITY PLAZA
Baby Items : level 6
Do remember to check with the sale assistant on any promo or discount on baby items. [nonthing to feel shy as this is quite a common practise here. THis is what I've learned from my local friends and it works!]

Since you live in China, I'm sure you're used to bargain shopping. There's a great kids market next to the People's Square, located on the basement level. The entrance is right next to a major bus stop/depot. Its called Er Tong Guwang Chang. I think the major intersection is Yan'An DOng Lu. They sell tons of overruns and you can get great deals on brand name baby and kids clothes. Bought all of my son's clothes there when he was around the same age.
