ORIGINAL POST

Let's send this far and wide to anyone you know in HK - the more people we have on this list the more leverage we have with the govt.

We'll be doing our part blasting this to our 20,000 opt-in members in HK tomorrow.

The petition is a good idea. But the problem with doing it at this time of year is that, until the north-easterly wind returns in November to blow filth over us throughout the winter, people forget how bad the pollution can be.

or...perhaps it's a good time to send the petition out because right now we realise the most what we are missing when the pollution is bad

I dont think that just because there are few good days in HK (I wouldnt know because I am spending this week working in Luang Prabang to get away from the pollution...) that people will suddenly forget the problem... because wait till next week when the factories crank up the generators and buses and commercial vehicles start to belch their poisons onto our streets again...

I signed the petition although I doubt the ability of the government to actually do something. At least it will know we're not happy about it and are beginning to have a collective voice in protest.

And though we have sunny skies today, the return of the pollution is as envitable as another bad Tom Cruise movie.

What really get me angry is the fact that it is allegedly illegal to leave a vehicle idling in the streets of hk (is this a fact?) and on my way to work, in the short distance that I walk, I nearly suffocate because there are minibuses, work trucks, a flatbed with a 1940's engine and no exhaust pipe, etc, etc, etc idling away...and sometimes without anybody in them!! And to make matters worse, two day ago A POLICE VAN was parked right along side these vehicles IDLING AWAY with two cops inside! Say nothing of the fact that it is in front of mt place of employment...a school full of children.

No, there is no law on idling engines... only a "guideline": lawmakers seldom vote for laws under which they themselves might well be convicted.

I found this on a government website:

"In May 2000, the Legislative Council All-Party Clean Air Alliance proposed to legislate to require motorists to switch off the engines of their vehicles while waiting. However, the Government did not accept the proposal, only indicating that it would organize publicity and educational activities to advise motorists to switch off vehicle engines while waiting."

Pollution created by vehicles is responsible for a significant portion of the air pollution in HK - when the experts mention its dangerous to walk the streeets of HK they specifically referred to the fact that you are face to face with the exhaust pipes of delivery trucks and buses...

WHY do we have endless double decker buses riding around empty all day? Could it be because they make money off the ads on the sides of the bus and that it costs money to park them?

Why is the govt not all over the operators to stop this????

Have a close look at Christine Loh's summary of the Problems on the petition main doc - its not only the PRC factories causing this mess....

Ed,

I'm not sure the buses make money off those ads... most ads on the back of them are for Chow Tai Fook jewellery, which - of course - is owned by the same outfit as NWFB and Citybus.

And, much as I love conspiracy theories, paying the drivers, maintenance and fuel costs for fleets of empty buses simply to display your own ads could not possibly make economic sense.

Loads of ads on the KMB buses that I am sure are paid... and even if they are ads for other companies owned by the bus company then its still a reason to keep the buses on the road... out of one pocket into another as the saying goes

Indeed a very difficult issue that will involve some difficult decisions. If this doesnt improve very soon it is like that AX will be moving our HO somewhere else.

After listening to the experts at the conference I have been spending as much time out of HK as possible seeing resort clients... 10 days in Phuket and Khao Lak and I decided to take a side trip up to Luang Prabang for a week (which is where I am now). Due to the nature of our business I can run things from pretty much anywhere there is a net connection but obviously most people dont have that option...

Knew it couldn't last - the 'haze' is back with a vengeance out in Sai Kung way. 3 days of clear skies and one overnighter of factories running all night to make up for the lost time and we are back to square one.

Ya - I just received an email from a member indicating everything is back to normal....

I have been out of HK for almost two weeks now and I dont have the constant nasal drip, dry cough and eye irritations... like the panel at the conference said, HK is a dangerous place to live :(

Maybe I will go on a pollution strike and stay in Laos until the govt does something!!!

On the positive side we have over 3000 signatures on the petition - make sure to forward that on - apathy and complacency are our enemy.

Wake up people. The factories are back on and the air is now crappy again. The first few days of the week were beautiful and I believe the cars and trucks were still on the streets, right? Most of the pollution is caused by factories in southern China, period.

Factories are responsible for 70% - vehicles, ships in the HK harbour are responsible for about 30%.... (see the comments from the experts on our petition doc).

Factories is going to take some long term action (again see the summary from Christine Loh) - vehicles are something we can do something about in the short term.

In any event this problem must be tackled at all levels
