I used to live in a village house in Sai Kung as well and did pest control on a regular basis. The bug traps do work but I'm not sure which ones you're referring to - the ones I've seen trap the bug inside so it's not able to move but it won't kill it, you'll still need to trash the bug trap with the bug inside. Pest control is a more long term solution.
