No, it's not like wine. After whisky goes into the bottle, it doesn't get better or worse. The beneficial ageing process happens in casks (wood) before it's bottled.

You can keep it unopened 20 years or so, but there's no advantage.

why some wiskys are valuable?

Same reason as a Ferrari is more valuable than a Hyundai car: quality of materials/ingredients; quality of workmanship/blenders skill; rarity; quality of marketing/advertising; economies of scale for Johnnie Walker and Hyundai.

Actually, it doesn't cost much more to produce and package expensive whiskys (or whiskeys or whiskies) than it does to produce cheaper ones. Most of the pricing is a result of marketing and demand. Of course, the packaging is greatly affected by the profit the distillery can generate, but the packaging doesn't determine the price: its the other way around.

Different whiskys certainly do taste different, but plenty of people find traditional top-dollar whiskys, single malt or blended, to be too harsh for their palate.

The only 'gullibility' involved is when someone is choking down something that they find barely drinkable, and very expensive, simply because their impression of popular opinion tells them that its 'good whisky'.

Sample a lot of types, mix them with various things (ice, water, soda, etc) and decide what you like. If your friends turn elitist and snub their noses at your preferences, don't drink with them.

riverman: Some good points. For many luxury goods, presentation tends to drive price to end-consumer more than actual product quality or the “cost to produce” – especially the case in very brand conscious but otherwise uninformed markets (China, Hong Kong, and the US come to mind).

However, I have one quibble: It actually does cost more to (consistently) produce a higher quality whisky. In particular, storage costs can be considerable.

And depending on where you are from, it might very well be “whiskey” instead of “whisky” :-)

The Bard of Banff

Whisky Or Whiskey?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Scotsman who spells

Whisky with a n ‘e’,

should be hand cuffed

and thrown head first in the Dee.

In the USA and Ireland,

it’s spelt with an ‘e’

but in Scotland

it’s real ‘Whisky’.

So if you see Whisky

and it has an ‘e’,

only take it,

if you get it for free!

For the name is not the same

and it never will be,

a dram is only a real dram,

from a bottle of ‘Scotch Whisky’.
