My child will start Reception at CIS next fall. We currently live in Kowloon Tong and I am concerned that all her classmates will live on the island and she may feel somewhat alienated living so far away from others. I don't know anyone else attending. I would appreciate any input from CIS parents whether I should consider a move to the island.

Hi bbong,
Mine is in year 2 right now. Yes, most of the students live on the island. However, as long as you can work out the playdates, there shouldn't be any problem. The children don't understand the difference. As a matter of fact, reception is the only year where you can do serious playdates. They become a rare thing after reception, in particular after Year 1. There is just no time for it. Almost no one does it anymore in year 2.

How very very sad that is. Why on earth is there no time to do playdates after Year 1? Surely it is not all home work after Year 1? My children are in Years 3&4&5 and still have lots of playdates, aren't playdates part of childhood any more?

cathyiane, I am assuming that yours are at CIS as well. Playdates do happen during offdays. I am referring to weekdays. Don't know how you do it. By the time they get home, it is already 4:00pm. Some homework, some playing then dinner. Most go to sleep early as they have to get up early. Some children have piano lessons. Even without anything extra, there is no time to get to places during the week. Reception is different as it is half day. Good for you if you can find the time.

Thanks MC. I also have a question about the bus service. Do most reception kids take the bus to school? I don't know whether I should drive her. Is the drop off and pick up process very chaotic?

I think so. I actually think taking the bus is a good way of socializing. The bus company is quite organized. Of course, occasionally, you would need to call but they are pretty good. Haven't had any problems so far. The other thing is that when you arrange playdates, you can just put your child with the other child on the same bus. Many do that.

No! MC they do not go to CIS and for obvious reasons now it seems.

cathyiane, I actually agree with you. However, if you want to learn Mandarin there is no way around it. Local schools are even worse. It is unfortunate, but that is what it is. People make their own choices..

Hi all,
Apologies to MC first of all. I never did call your mobile as I kind of chickened out, wouldn't know how to begin the conversation...maybe we should just all meet up somewhere and it would be easier to make friends! I think as adults, it is so much harder to make new friends out of your own comfort zone.
My son is starting at CIS in the Autumn, so guess we will get to meet, but then your child is older?
bbong, we live HK side, but I belive the school bus is the best way due to traffic, have a look at the website re pick up/ drop off, and it sounds awful, by the way my parking is not that great! Guess our kids may be in same year, but haven't been allocated time slot yet. I find the times weird, 8-11 am so early, but 12-3pm makes lunch a prob?
