At 3 and a half months, she has started to lick her palm and or fingers-both at the same time.

Otherwise, she is looking for my nipple for comfort.

What does your baby likes and what kind of comfort do you give in replace of nipples and hands?

Are you doing the dummy thing? My small one, now three, was a real sucker! We even saw her sucking in-utero! She sucked and sucked and sucked my boobs til she was nearly two and a half! Maybe the teeth are starting to move? Try a teether, a dummy, or a bottle with water in it. Let us all know how you go! My friend's small one (now four) is/was a thumb sucker and no sign of budging so I would try and discourage the self soothing thing. Not enough experience in this area tho so take it with a grain of salt but Im sure others will have opinions. All the best.

My 6 month old... started doing the same thing around 3 months, now he's moved on to all five fingers, AND he refuses any type of pacifiers( I have bought about 6 different kinds). My elder one LOVED the pacifier, the second baby, NOT even for 10 seconds. I still try... but he won't take it.

So I found he likes a hankerchief (terry towel material).... and loves to chew the corners. Thank goodness ANY towel is alright, it doesn't have to be the SPECIFIC one. Goodness!

Kate - ours is the same!

Our 4.5 month old, loves his muslin cloths. he holds them, and right into the mouth! He doesn't have a favourite one, any will do :)

any cloth he sems to put into his mouth - clothing, towels, washcloth, etc... but muslins seem to be his favourite.

(so low maintenence, a friend joked his next toy will be a brick!)

Ellie-

mine is now three months old - has recently discovered that she LOVES her long index finger, or her entire fist. I'm not too worried as her sister was the same and eventually stopped bothering sucking things. Never used a dummy and so I would actually be GLAD that your baby is a self soother...

We introduced the dummy at about 4 weeks....he's now 10 weeks and while it helps to calm him down sometimes, he doesn't really search for it and he doesn't use it at night - he can't control it well enough so the last thing i want is to spend the night holding it for him while he sleeps.

He is now starting to suck on his entire fist - think he's trying to find his thumb! it's quite funny watching and sometimes not so funny because a few times he did it quite soon after his feed and puked out some milk out as a result.

my poor babe sometimes puked out immediately after a feed because we moved her too fast.sometimes i let her sucks on the dummy but most times, she doesnt fancy at all.i cant get a decent day out,by one and a half hours,i always need to be back home for she will already start to look for me and my voice, smells ,whatever.is it tru that breastfeeding babies dont like to feed on bottles?i tried introducing them, she hated it and fights with me.my husband commented i should be able to be more relaxed once weaning starts.anyone tried the weaning by gina ford?
