Feeling Sad/Homesick

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by Brenrenee 20 yrs ago
have only been in Bangkok to live now for about a week, and it feels like I have cried everyday. When I came to visit my partner it all seemed ok, and I thought I was going to be fine, but Now I am really struggling. This is MY first overseas posting and I am not sure if I am normal in the way I feel, or just losing the plot. Can some of the other more "experienced" expats advise, on firstly if what I am feeling is normal, and two, what do I do to stop feeling sad all the time?

Yes totally normal especially with your first time living overseas. Homesickness has actually been proven to have the same psychologcal effects as a mild depression but don't worry it goes away pretty quickly, you just have to keep busy. Getting familiar with your new surroundings helps, as being homesick is actually as much to do with missing familar surroundings and routines as much as missing family and friends. Meeting new people is really important so get out and about as much as possible and don't sit at home wallowing. Also do things that you might not be able to do at home, to remind yourself how lucky you are, like lazing around at the pool or shopping for bargains in the local markets. Pamper yourself a bit for the first few weeks. The hard part after a few years is fitting in back home.

In totally agreement - had the same problem. Was fine at first then got pretty depressed, went home for Christmas and realised my old life wasn't really going anywhere and my friends were only a phone call away. You will get over it but it will take a while. Good luck.

I was the same when i lived abroad for the first time so much so that my doctor told me to go home, but i didn't as that was where my husbands job was,i stuck it for 4yrs then went home and when i did it was like a letdown i thought hey this place called home isn't so great after all not after youve lived abroad for 4 yrs and experience different things and people, so here i am now in china on my second year and never homesick anymore, it took me years to stop missing home but the way you are feeling is totally nornmal it takes time, you are grieving for your family and friends but you in time will make new friends like i did(even though iwill always be friends with the people back home), so just try and keep yourslf busy go out and join different clubs or groups to meet people, once you have done this it will get easier as these people are in the same situation as you.
