Shops in London

Thought I'd also post here along with the pregnancy forum:

I'm off to London next week and would like to compare price and availability of baby supplies like strollers and cots with what I have seen in HK. Can anybody recommend good areas in London with a high concentration of baby shops?

Thanks!

Hi,

Not sure about an individual area with a high concentration. There are quite a few stores that are particularly good with nursery equipment and advice. John Lewis on Oxford Street is a good place to start. Daisy and Tom on the King's Road is a pleasure to shop in, but can be a bit more explensive than some of the other stores for the same brands. Lilliput in Battersea (255 Queenstown Road, I think) is better valua and they have agreat array of stuff. The larger Mothercare stores (Mothercare World) are worth a visit too, they are much bigger than the ones here. The one in Kew is very popular, but that may be because of the parking facilities (which may not be important to you). I know that there are lots more, but cannot think of them right now. Sorry that this is a bit of a widely dispersed list. Will keep thinking. Have a great trip.

BabiesRUs (part of toysRUs) has a huge selection of baby products in the UK much cheeper than most baby stores, also John Lewis has a policy if you see it cheeper elsewhere they will match the price. ASDA and TESCO larger stores have very reasonable priced baby products. Also dont forget to check out Mothercare world. Check all their websites first to see locations. If you want to see these large stores close to one another you may have to travel out to Essex Lake side shopping centre or Bluewater shopping centre on the southside. Good Luck, wish I was going for a visit.

Another option is to have a look around the above mentioned shops to see which products you want and then buy from kiddicare.com(they are considerably cheaper) and usually deliver within a couple of days.

oh yes forgot to mention larger Boots stores and Marks and Spencer have lovely baby things, hklassie is right if you have time to order from kiddicare they usually beat all the store prices. Have Fun !

Kiddicare is an excellent suggestion. www.twoleftfeet.co.uk also have a comprehensive stock of most brands at competitive prices. They deliver for free within the UK. You may be able to get either of them to deliver to HK at a price. Enjoy your trip.

Oh -- and one more thing: Any good suggestions for shops / dept. stores with a good selection of nursing bras? I have heard good things about Elle Macpherson's range but would like to have some other ones to compare at the same time. Thanks!!

I think the best place for bra fittings (including nursing bras) in London is Rigby and Peller - Hans Road, just off the Brompton Road, opposite Harrods (http://www.rigbyandpeller.com). Most department store have decent fitters too - good old John Lewis etc. Mothercare may also be worth a visit, but can be a bit touch and go; have gotten some of my best and worst fitting bras there. One other thing to try is the NCT, they have fairly decent bras, usually you visit a member's home (obviously one who specialises in fitting/selling bras). Sounds like you have a busy shopping trip planned.

On baby suppliers on the Kings Road. There are afew baby stores, but most of them are just for clothes, toys (Trotters, ELC, Petit Bateau etc.). I may be wrong on this, but think that Daisy and Tom is the only one stop shop (apart from Peter Jones on Sloane Sqaure).

Ooh... I LOVE Rigby and Peller. Good to hear that they are good with nursing bras too. Thanks MrsL!

You'll prbably remember then to get there when they open (should not bee too difficult if you're still on HK time) and never go on Saturday! It's just luck what they have in your size at the time, you'll probably get more stock at Mothercare etc, but not quite as good a fit. Am getting very jealous of your shopping trip here. Have a ball!

Thanks Mrs. L. I haven't been back to London in ages and am looking forward to it much. Now if only I can decide what stroller / carseat / bassinet combo to buy... not to mention how I am going to carry all these bits and pieces on the tube!

Most places will deliver. It's getting them onto the plane that will be the real challenge (although it's all good practice)!

Oh goodness, the plane! Hadn't even thought of that hurdle...!

Ooooh get used to it! You can kiss the days of hand luggage goodbye - once you have a little one in tow you might as well travel with an articulated truck! Although you do get more disciplined after each trip, as you learn that you are not an octopus and slowly sacrifice the kitchen sink and various other 'nice to have' items from your luggage.
