sleeping on tummy

i was wondering at what age you let your child sleep on their tummy. I understand there is a contecton between SIDS and tummy sleeping but my bubs sleeps better abd prefers to be on her tummy so during the day i allow it but check on her every 10mins, at night she starts off that way but then we turn her onto her back. Is it ok to let them sleep on them tummy once they can turn themselves over?

I understand your hesitation in not wanting them to sleep on their tummy. I was exactly the same when my daughter started doing it at 6 months old. I would spend my nights getting up every 10mins to turn her over only to find she would instantly turn back over again. I spoke to many people and found most experienced the same thing with the general consensus being that if they are strong enough to roll over on their own, they are strong enough to roll back.

My son started doing it at about 5 months and despite my anxiety over the situation I let him do it. Thankfully I haven't had an issue at all.

How old is your child?

Just wanted to add - I have never put them down on their tummy. I only left them if they did it themselves. HTH

I let my second child sleep on her tummy in the travel cot while I was around.

Otherwise I would always put her down to sleep on her back.

Once my kids started rolling themselves over I just left them to it.

Thanks for your replies my bubs is about to turn 4mths and i myself place her on her tummy she doesn't yet trun herself but she can lean up on her arms. At night she use to wake up and cry 5mins after going to sleep so as she slept so well on her tummy during the day we tried it in the evenings and she went straight off to sleep. As i said i turn her over beofre we go to bed but i'd like to let her sleep like that but feel relaxed about it. I think from your responses i'll wait till she can turn herself before letting her sleep that way all night.

I think they say that once your baby's got good head control (able to lift her head up), then the risk is much lower. I just went by that rule in the early months but if I did wake in the night, I would turn her over. If not, as long as she had good head control and NO pillows around her, I didn't worry. She's 21 months now and still sleeps on her tummy.

I can still recalled my son used to sleep on his tummy when he was around 6 to 7 months and he still does sometimes... ( he is already 7 years old now). Tummy sleeping is generally frowned upon by most pediatricians, other parents, and anyone who watches the news. We all know the latest SIDS research warns against letting your baby sleep in any position except on his back. I do not mean to undermine these warnings, and this guide is not meant to provide medical advice, but to talk frankly with other parents who have already made the decision to allow their babies to be tummy sleepers.

Other things parents of tummy sleepers can do to ease their minds and keep their babies safe include placing your baby in the middle of the crib and avoiding loose clothing and bedding. You'll need a nice firm mattress to prevent your baby's face from sinking into the bedding. Of course, never leave your baby unattended.

Well, talking about all these, my hubby was a tummy sleeper, and he still does now.......:-))

My daughters cot has a special latex mattress has holes in with will HELP in preventing cot death but no something i rely on. There are no pilows or cot bumpers but as she can't roll yet (4mths next wk)i am still nervous. She just sleeps sooooo much better more sound on her tummy than her back. MayC how old was your little girl when she started sleeping on her tummy?

Had the same thing with both of mine. They both started to roll at about 4 months, and no amount of turning them back worked (within a minute they would roll right back again). Just resulted in lots of sleepless nights for me. People suggested all sorts of things like using rolled up towels to prevent them from rolling over, but most suggestions seemed more likely to cause SIDS problems than prevent them. In the end I gave in, and with words of comfort from our paediatrician trusted in their abilities to turn their heads etc.

Perthites, I think she started doing that in late Jan while we were in Sydney (she was born in September), so I guess she was 4+ months at the time. I bought a sleeping bag for her. You can get a very thin one (almost like a sheet) from Seiyu in Shatin. Great for the summer days and would reduce the risk of your baby being covered up with blankets whilst sleeping. I never bothered with rolling towels to keep her from rolling. That would send me panicking because it would be the same as giving her a pillow. Funnily enough, now at 21 months, I give her a small pillow and a thin blanket but she kicks off her blanket during the night so I still use a thin sleeping bag sometimes. She's so cute now, she sleeps on her tummy but with her bum up in the air and head usually to the left.

My eldest 2 slept on their tummies from birth as that was the norm, it was only when I had my third that it had been changed to putting them to sleep on their backs. But even though babies are put to sleep on their backs you still need to give them 'tummy time' every day. I read an article just this morning on the same subject saying that although the nunber of cot deaths has fallen since the back to sleep campaign, the number of babies with flat head syndrome(some long word beginning with P), has increased to 1 in 15 babies suffering from it.

cd we actually started puting bubs on her tummy beacuse she was geting such a flat head and as she wouldn't sleep on her side we put her on her tummy. In doing that we found she actully slept better and so we've been doing it ever since. Unfortunatly the flat head is still there but the Dr tells us once she starts rolling it will get better. I actually don't care that much as we tried for long to have her i'm just happy she exists! on the other hand it could be something she could blame on me when she's 15yrs so i suppose i should try to do more to correct it!
