Domestic going to Australia

ORIGINAL POST

A friend has moved to Australia for employment (from Hong Kong) and he wants to take his Domestic Helper (Philipina) to Sydney with him.

My understanding is that it is not possible. Does anyone have any experience in this regard? If she goes as a tourist, what length of time will she get a visa for?

Cant go as a turist and work or apply for different visa status once there. I suggest to contact the Australian Consulate and ask.

i know a couple who brought a maid to the UK - they had to employ her under English employment rules - eg much higher minimal wage than here but still cheaper than hiring a local.

Not sure about Oz though, their immig. policies are one of the strictest in the world

DH can apply for a maximum of two stays, each of no more than four weeks each, in any 12 month period.

Info on the Oz consulate website:

People have done it - and the DH goes under a "study visa" needs to be enrolled in a recognised course or university and they need to show attendance and passes for their visa to be maintained. They live with their 'sponsor" and work as their DH while trying to maintain their study visa status. it is not a legal avenue.

I know of a family who moved back to Australia for medical reasons after 15 years in HK - father had a brain tumor and needed treatment etc - they applied for their DH who had been with them for 6 years to come help out during this stressful time where the parents would need to travel to hospitals for treatment and have stays and major operations etc....

Aust immigration denied their request - which was very strict as they were not asking for the the DH to live permanently - just 12 months.

Philippines citizens have the highest overstay rate in Australia (2.9%) of any nationality except Vietnamese, so Filipinas are naturally treated with suspicion in Oz visa applications: the visa approving officer knows he has a 1 in 34 chance of trouble.
