Do nothing at all. Stop pumping! :) The machine makes your body think you need to produce more milk. Massage ONLY for comfort. I cannot stress this enough. If you have not gotten mastitis already, I can almost promise you that you will not -- usually happens right away. My advice:

-eat TONS of parseley (grind up in a blender and mix with acidic juice to drink)

-eat tons of milk

-take a decongestant for several days.

I have tons of experience on this through the many ups and downs of breastfeeding. To be blunt, just ignore your boobs. Milk will dry up on its own. Good luck!

now that I re-read, I actually meant "tons of MINT" not milk. Got milk on the mind. :) Glad things are going well!

I recently weaned as well. I dropped 1 feed every week and by the time it was twice a day, I stretched the time between the 2 sessions. When it was down to once a day, I pumped whenever I felt full. Then I stretched it to once every 2 days, once every 3 days. After that, I stopped completely as my breasts were not full anymore. I didn't take any medicine or drinks or whatever. The milk supply stopped by itself.

Hi there - I'd like to ask if anyone has any advice about breast milk (v small amount)continuing to be produced a long time after stopping breastfeeding. I've breastfed 3 children for about a year each in close succession, actually there continued to be a small amount of production throughout pregnancies 2 and 3 though I wasn't feeding then, now my youngest is 2yrs, stopped feeding him at just over 10mnths, and STILL have milk production. It's not really a problem, sometimes i get a little tingling, and if I investigate, get a fair squirtiung of milk! (I don't do it v often, so doubt i am encouraging it) Also it seems to happen more during certain times of the month (oestrogen production?) and if I am having a particulary nice cuddle with one of them. It's not a prob as such, but I wonder sometimes about 'confusing' my body, and maybe there being a bit of hormonal confusion as a result. (i am particulary grumpy pre menstrually!!) appreciate any replies1

Ruth, I went to a LLL meeting recently in HK and the leader said she still was able to squeeze some milk out for a couple of years after stopping feeding her youngest child. I also have a friend who still sometimes gets a tingling in her breasts, although no milk, if she hears a baby cry (or even a cat miaow!) even though her youngest child is 10 years old! So maybe it is not so unusual...

thanks for the replies! :-)), that's amazing about the cat miaowing!! maybe i'm not so weird after all. Ruth, could you let me know why it could be a doctor issue, do you mean it could be a symptom of something one should see a Dr about? Thanks

Ruth...perhaps Chinese oats are different from western ones? Just a thought...

I stopped too quickly and ended up in hospital with mastitis. When I was there, I was told to keep pumping every 4 hours to get rid of my fever. I also needed to take antibiotics.

When the fever was gone, the midwife there had me squeeze a bit of milk every 4 hours or whenever I felt full.... just a few drops, then told me to stop. Eventually, my milk stopped.

This happened when I was in Sydney.

Heh...the Chinese calls the western oats xiaomai (I think), while there are others called yanmai and damai. I'll have to check with my wife, she's better at these kind of things...(I...don't produce milk...ever...).

Hmm...she has no idea also...but in Chinese medicine, you increase milk supply by taking fish soup. Don't tell me you do that to cut off milk supply in the west!

I'll probably be rolling on the floor laughing after that!

Wearing cabbage leaves is thought to help though the advice is antedotal. Generally weaning is done slowly over a number of week as more feeds are replaced with other foods and fluids.Continue just hand/machine expressing or leaking in a warm shower to remove milk to comfort level to avoid plugged ducts etc.

Sage tea is another remedy. See the following link for the recipe.
