What happened to the smoke-free plans for Hong Kong?... I understood that all public places would become smoke-free this summer (incl. bars, restaurants, and clubs) but it looks like the project has been completely forgotten...

The Bill is still under discussion; therefore nobody knows the final details or when it will become law. You can see the Committee papers at:

How come we don't hear a word about it any more?? Or is the World Cup the only concern of our city?... For my part, I would have enjoyed watching the games in a smoke-free bar...

Friends in the civil service tell me that the reason this is held up is because at the moment there were originally two different stages to the smoking ban -- banning smoking in restaurants and banning smoking in bars. From what I hear, they are pushing for the restaurant ban as early as August, but they are also trying to sneak the bar ban put into place at the same time. Naturally, this slows things down as they are meeting a lot of resistance.

Any update on the situation? I've seen some adds in the MTR, but didn't have time to read the small text... Will all public places (incl. bars and restaurants) really be smoke-free in January? Really hope so...

only bars/pubs/clubs that admit those under 18 will be smoke free. have to wait for 2009 before everything will be smokefree. can't wait for that day!

I don't bother to go to bars in Lang Kwai or Wanchai, after years and years of it, I just got sick of the smoking, the stench that gets into your clothes, hair, lungs, just putrid. There needs to be places for Hong Kong people who want to go out to drink and eat. A lot of tourists can't smoke in pubs/restaurants in their own countries, why should they come here and jeopardise our health. The ban was supposed to come into effect at the beginning of 2006.

At least they got round to banning death duties. Geez, I remember when they allowed people to smoke on aeroplanes, all the smokers would book non-smoking seats then go down the back into the smoking section and puff away, too bad for you if you were a non-smoker who couldn't get a non-smoking seat because they were all full of smokers.
