I run a small UK based business industrialising consumer products with a local Chinese supplier, I would like to employ a local Chinese design and quality engineer is this possible and can any body suggest a practical route to do this.

Hi yes you are correct, at the moment I do not want to, but if this is the only way then I would, I understand there are possible scheme to allow foreign companies to hire but I can not find any one actualy doing it!

Chinese labour law does not apply to employment contract between an overseas company and a local Chinese. However, a contract is still a contract if someone is willing to sign it.
Please note that other areas of law may still apply. For example, you are still responsible for your employee's act during the course of work.

Thanks for that, I see no reason why we can not use a standard UK employment contract, can I ask if the person transfers from a city to GZ how do they get a permit to live therere,?

A person can live in GZ by applying for a temporary resident permit from the local street administration where he or she is staying in. Most people here never bother to apply until they are "caught".
