I am having difficulties with quite significant stess incontinence after delivery - has anyone else suffered with this and how long did it take to get better? What did you do to help it along?

Don't worry it's normal. Try to do 15mins in the and 15mins in the afternoon of pelvic floor muscles and it will improve. Everyones pelivic floors muscles are different some weaker than others. For me it took a couple of weeks before i had to worry about running to the loo!

I ended up seeing a physio at Lucy Lords clinic. I was tested (internally) to see how well my pelvic floor muscles were and found I had a prolapse. I needed to do quite a bit of work to get things under control and am now better than ever.

Thank you for your replies. @@, I am pleased that you recovered as this is truly an awful thing to have to have. I am interested to know about the kind of work you did exactly to get things under control? I have been doing pelvic floor exercises for the past 7 weeks and recently begun with a physio. Will ask her to check for prolapse next time. I have made progress from really bad leaking constantly to a few drips every hour but it is really hard going and especially with a new baby. Any advice would be welcome and also some success stories so that I can be reassured that this will eventually go away!! Many thanks.

Just keep doing those pelvic floor exercises, don't stop. I was on epidural for the birth and that made incontinence even worse - not fun with lochia, sometimes i would go to the toilet to change my maternity napkin and find that i'd already gone! But thankfully, it went away quite quickly...i actually had slight incontinence prior to birth and pregnancy and was terrified it would worsen. But i did quite abit of pelvic floor and just tried not to think too much - for most people it'll eventually go away but if it doesn't, to your gynae soon!

My physio gave me a couple of things to use, a small egg shaped weight which I had to use for 10-15 mintues a day, as I got better at keeping it in I would increase the weight.
I also had another gadget which I had to squeeze and I could monitor the strength of my exercises and quality. I found using this that I wan't doing my pelvic floors effectively which is quite common.

Thank you everyone and Perthites not to worry as I found your post reassuring too. I am going to ask my physio about the treatment program you talk about @@ as all that she has given me so far is a bunch of pelvic floor exercises and I have no idea if I am doing them correctly anyway. I so wish for this to be gone soon and have been quite down about it as of late but it has helped to read your replies. Thank you.

Hi Lamaze,
The good news is after my efforts my pelvic floor is better now than before I had my first child.
I was actually told by three doctors that I would need surgery to fix my problems so was very happy to have found Lucy Lord who had me doing pilates and seeing the physio.
Good luck and I hope you can get everything back on track. @@

Physio's can help a lot with teaching pelvic floor excercises and monitoring your progress - a life time effort to keep them in condition, that most of us don't do enough.

Hope the physio helps completely, but if not you could consider a consultation with a urologist. They fix things surgically.
