Hi - I've been in HK now for about 3 months and starting to look for holiday locations in South East Asia given then proximity of HK. I'm Advanced PADI certified and would like to go for a week of diving - where would you recommend? Budget is under HK$10k for everything...

Thanks,

We went diving in Cebu/Mactan Island and it was absolutely fantastic. there are several marina parks with beautiful corals (300 different types) and lovely reef fishes, as well as e few wrecks. The visibility was wonderful. Prices were very reasonable too. We paid 3600 HK$ per person for 5 days and 4 nights.

Thanks everyone so far - can I be so bold as to ask for specifics like actual city names or dive operators as that will help with booking the holiday. Are there any local HK dive operators that run packages to Cebu or Palawan?

You can see full-board rack rates at the following website. But it is much, much cheaper to book with a travel agent in the Philippines than at these "international" rates:

We booked a basic package to Cebu with Cathay Pacific Holidays and arranged the diving in the resort - Padi certified. You might want to go down to Wanchai to the dive shops (Pro Dive and Bunns) they have diving package holidays as well. We found Cebu to be most convenient for short trips as Cathay has direct flights to Cebu (2,5hrs). We got onto the morning flight and checked in at the resort at 12:30pm... oh, and the next decompression chamber is in Cebu City.

Ok not exactly SE Asia... but how about Guam. Continental fly there four times a week (4.5 hours flying time) and there is excellent diving, including coral reefs and wrecks. There are whales, sharks and dolphins to dive with too.

I would try frontier scuba at Peurto Gallero, Philipines. Great dive place, not too touristy and accessible from manilla in 3 hours. I loved it so much I am going back tomorrow. checkout www.frontierscuba.com

Redang Island, off the state of Trengganu in Malaysia has always been a favourite dive spot amongst divers. You would fly from HK to Kuala Lumpur (not sure if there are direct flights from HK to Trengganu but don't think so) then take a short 1 hour domestic flight from KL to Redang Island. I just got back from Redang - the sea was turquoise (I really mean turquoise) and so clear you can see right through to the sea bed at more shallow areas. It is simply beautiful.
