Poor you! You must be exhausted.
What time does she get up by sleeping so late? How many naps does she has? What is the duration of each nap?
I have been thru the same thing & here is what I have done to my baby.
Try to enforce a very strict schedule. Wake her up at 6:30 -7:00am. Morning nap at 9:00am.
Then, put her to nap at 1:00-1:30pm. Two naps together shouldnt' be more than 3.5 hours. If the morning or afternoon nap is way too short or skipped, try to keep the child up and go to the next schedule sleep time, but move it a little earlier. Protect the sleep schedule.
If you can, try to put her earlier to bed like 7:30pm. Sounds like crazy but if the baby is overtired - they won't be able to go to bed.
If she cried, like many other said, go there to pat her a little bit & lengthen the time you go there every time.
I got the above ideas by books like "Healthy sleep habits, Happy child" by Marc Weissbluth & "Solve your child's sleep problem" by Richard Ferber. Both are very good books.
If you need more detailed info, you can pm me!
Good luck!

I would say your baby is over tired and at 8 months old has not worked out how to go to sleep properly. I support what TC1 has said - you need to make sure you are the one controlling her sleep - not her. Babies that age need between 10 - 15 hours of sleep a day. Work out how much your babe is having and try to make it between that figure.

I have one child who never needed much sleep, period. By 9 months she only needed about 10 hurs per day which was a 2 hr nap in afternoon and an 8 hr stretch at night. Try Waking baby up earlier, don't let afternoon nap extend beyond 3 PM. It may be time to drop morning nap. I find there's a bit of a transition time when naps are dropped -- when no nap is not quite enough sleep but having the nap is too much sleep. My solution with 3rd child was sort of to have one day with the nap and one day without, until the nap was outgrown entirely. But I'm also a fan of every child having a rest time in the afternoon regardless whether they sleep, until age 5 or so. Some "down" time is good for everybody.

How do you get the baby to sleep 2 hours in the afternoon? My baby is almost 5 months. She sleeps at night from about 9pm - 7am. Morning nap for about 45 mins but it is very hard to get her to sleep for 2 hours in the afternoon. She ends up taking 2 - 3 30 - 45 min naps in the afternoon and evenings. Have tried to put her down in her cot to sleep around lunchtime, but she just won't settle. Any advise. Thanks.

hi janey....
sounds like we're in the same boat...quite a few threads have been created about napping/bedtime so you might want to refer to them!

Hi Wheelymate, Thanks for the info on the other threads - very useful. You are right I think our babies are similar. The nighttime for the last week has been great - she falls asleep on her own now! It is still pretty hard to get her onto a routine for daytime napping, although today she managed 1 1/2 hours around lunchtime! Also she refuses to fall asleep on her own during the day. She is over 16lbs now so it's getting harder to rock her to sleep - will have to slowly change that soon as my back and shoulders are beginning to ache!
